It's very much clear outside with good visibility yet the stars are very faint tonight indeed so im guessing there's some kind of thin upper level mist/cloud.

Temperature dead on -6.0c at the moment, not as cold as the rest of the Midlands probably because there's not as much snow cover though there is still an inch or two or just about all surfaces and plenty of ice?

Looking at the forecasts and the charts it seems we are due for the battle of the air masses, starting as early as next week with a slow thaw starting down here.

Has the cold managed to entrench itself sufficiently to resist the advance of the warm or not? - looking at various forecasts opinion appears to be divided and I am not sure we can rely on the various computer models because so very much can change in such a short time.

My own feeling is that the cold especially in the south of England is not sufficiently entrenched enough at this moment to resist such an incursion. On the other hand if that Scandi High were to maintain its position and align itself so that we were in the direct line of the airflow from NW Russia the situation could change, though personally I would like to a period of -5C as a max and probably a bit more snow in southern England to give the cold air a better chance of establishing itself.

The other scenario is that we could get mild weather for a time only for the cold to re-assert itself later.

Any thoughts?

another 'Ice Day', max of -0.5C again after -5.6C overnight.

|'m not sure this area has had consecutive ice days in the last 30 years I'll have to refer to RAF Finningley data-certainly not since I've been doing weather reports over the past 11 years.
