Interesting to note that in GPs preview for the winter season and the analogues he showed, that at times the UK would be the battle ground between bitter Arctic/Polar Continental air and mild Atlantic air. The problem would be where this zone sets itself up and with just a shift of a few hundred miles or so where low pressure and high pressure positions itself could mean east or south easterly winds become south westerlies or vice versa. I remember a few of the guys KW, Nick S., indeed GP himself, amongst others discussing this in late Autumn/ early winter and this has now been causing major problems for the models, over the past few days or so.
