Absolutely Jane, it will not end in 2012, I was thinking about it probably ending in a few weeks time when the LHC fires up again so powerfully that it causes a vacuum bubble to form, thus a cosmic phase transition will spread out at the speed of light, changing the laws of Physics as it does, causing us all to cease to exist, and my final fading thoughts will be ...."bloody mayans, they didnt get that one right, did they?"...

Lol, I've been following the LHC for ages now. They hope to have beam tommorow morningohmy.gif I have been following it here http://meltronx.com/lhcmobile/index.html

It's scary and exciting. Dont' forget about the predicted magnectic hole theory by the so called Ivan Gorelik ( Dr dark energy LOL). Gawd that man is scary. According to him the Earth will explode in several days now that Cern is preparing for 7 Tev collisions!

So how do you know that there has been a pole reversal in the past? What is the evidence?

I recall a lecture whilst I was doing physics A level many years ago. The person taking it was researching the polar shift.

The way he did it was by analysising nomadic ancient fire places. The iron in the soil that burnt with the fire became fixed when it cooled. The direction of the then magnetic field also became fixed and could be plotted.

Any other ways of doing it?

If we're talking about the Earth: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geomagnetic_reversal, which also provides links to other sites.

If we're talking about the Sun, it's obvious as the polarity of the magnetic field is reversed between one solar cycle and the next. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solar_cycle

Not that I know a lot but I didn't even know they'd found evidence for the first 'rapid pole swap' never mind a second!!!

Maybe Einstein was right?

Hi GW,

I've followed the news about Pole Reversals for about 15 years, and I didn't know they'd found any evidence of a rapid reversal either. the movement of the NMP is certainly faster now than it was 20 years ago, but it would take several thousand years to flip at this rate.

I do think it's funny the way that people ( earlier in the thread) link it with 2012 and the Mayan Long Calendar, the media have planted the 2012 meme in most peoples minds....

Similar to that mentioned by pitwood. When iron-bearing lava cools and solidifies to form igneous rock, it becomes magnetised in the direction of the Earth's magnetic field. By analyzing samples of igneous rock of different ages around the world, geologists have found that the Earth's magnetic field actually flips over and reverses direction on an irregular schedule ranging from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of years.

Edit.

Oops, missed crepuscular rays wiki. link

It seem that they are still not pinning these events to a 'full polar reversal' just a period of acceleration during a 'reversal'. the other thing is that we seem to have bits and bats of reversed field in and amongst the 'normal field (like in the south Pacific at present?) so these lavas may only plot the appearance of such and area within a recognised reversal event.

I'm sure the 2012 catastrophists have had a lot of fun with rapid pole shift but ,to date, we see no evidence of such during reversal events?
