Snow In Roma, Italy.

Unfortunately I'm not there at the moment, but this morning thunder-snow struck Rome, dumping between 1 and 5 cm (depending on area of the city). Accumulations would have been much more if heavy rain had not soaked the ground before the event. Here is a selection of youtube videos and photos! Enjoy! Oh and by the way it snowed with a -4.5 at 850 (taking into consideration that Rome is 25km away from the warm Mediterranean sea!)

(a bit less at the Coliseum because of the massive urban heat island)

Normal, no, but then unheard of, no. In either 1985 or 1986, it snowed heavily in Rome a few days before Palm Sunday (causing disruption to flights, etc.), which means it must have been sometime after about 15 March or even about as late as 20 March. Within a week it was about 20°C.

I remember seeing photos in shop windows in Sorrento of the place covered in snow but think that was a very long time ago

I can just look out the window to see snow this morning :)

Exceptional warmth for western Europe as October begins

There'll be exceptionally warm temperatures for the time of year affecting much of western Europe during the coming days, but that warmth will only graze the UK for now. Next weekend may see a more direct hit with the potential for southerly winds to draw some of that heat north and take temperatures into the mid or high-twenties. Read the full update here

Unusually warm September ending with some warm sunshine but also some rain

September will end up as another unusually warm month, and there will be some further warm, sunny spells to come as it draws to a close. Another bout of rain will be moving up from the southwest on Saturday, though. Read the full update here
