Wintry precipitation at times last night- presumably all of sleet and snow as the temperature remained about +1c most of the night.

1cm fresh snow accumulation this morning, with some 3cm now along the shaded strip of the lawn.

Sunny periods today, feeling pleasant enough to sit in the garden (not in the snowy shaded strip though!).

Wind overnight light south/ calm, veered NNW midday. Shortly before the veer, a sudden rise in the temperature occurred up to 7c, so the the day's maximum was at 1100 (either side of this peak it was around 4-5c only).

Today was a good day for a lesson in how evaporative cooling, lapse rates and heights work together in helping to bring snow.

South western Cumbria caught a good 2 inches this morning, this area is normally a snow-free area due to the warming effects of the Irish Sea. However, the precipitation was very heavy as it hit the coast allowing evaporative cooling to take hold and bumping those lapse rates up and up, had it been light it would most probably have fallen as sleet.

Here in Windermere, we managed an inch and a half over the course of just a couple of hours at heights of 110 - 130m, whereas Kendal saw 5 hours of continuous snow, but the snow was much wetter and only gave a 2cm covering melting as it fell at a height of 50m. A difference of just 50m seems to have made all the difference. The snow was quite heavy in Windermere which aided evaporative cooling.

It shows how forecasting amounts and duration of snowfall is notoriously very difficult.

Back to the day in general, we saw some brightness this afternoon, but not enough to totally remove the snow. Maximum just about 2 degrees which quickly dropped to freezing around dusk, now at -1.5 degrees.

Some showery rain overnight (I presume but I was asleep!) after a frosty first part to the night until just after 2am when some showery rain moved across according to the radar and my weather station suddenly decided to record a rain rate of 140.4mm/h! the temp was actually slightly below 0C when it started raining but rose quickly so this probably caused some kind of blockage due to ice at first.

Feeling a bit spring like and milder than recent days with some sunshine up to midday - after that quite cloudy with the odd light shower. Some more bits of showery rain this evening.
