February 2010, Lampeter, Ceredigion, weather statistics and summary

Cold, dry and frosty

Rounded off this very cold winter with it's third well below average month.

Nights were frequently cold and frosty during February (17 air frosts), however maxima were not that much below average.

Although a dry month, it was not nearly as dry as last February (28mm).

1st -6th: An unsettled start to the month with rain at times. Temperatures generally above average, almost reaching 10c on the 5th, a level not attained since December 10th. The 6th was dry with sunny periods.

7th - 13th: Dry and rather cold to cold with some severe frosts, as low as -8.2c on the 11th. Limited sunshine by day, although the 11th saw unbroken brilliant sunshine.

14th-16th: Unsettled again, with rain/ showers at times and also sunny intervals. Near average temperatures, but still with some frosty nights.

17th-23rd: Cold with night frosts and wintry showers. Snow covered the ground on each morning from the 19th- 21st , this remaining in well shaded areas throughout the day times too.

24th- 28th: The 24th was an odd day in that it was very mild and sunny! It was the mildest since late November- this the day after the month's coldest maximum of 3.1c on the 23rd. The remainder of February saw temperatures around average with sunny intervals and some showers, and only ground frosts by night now.

As with January, snow on the ground was visible from here throughout the month, what with the by now very small drift remnants on nearby hills at above 350 metres.

95.1 mm of rain, which considering this is a short month is quite impressive (and quite worrying). 58mm of that has been in the last 7 days with 17.8 mm being the highest this month, set last Monday.

In a rare occurence this February was the 'warmest' of the 3 winter months with quite consistent maximums and minimums and no extremes in either case, but even so it was below average since I began recorings in 2003. That in itself shows how rarely cold the winter was.

There was a high rainfall total and very high number of precipitation days of which more than half had wintry precipitation! Although there was little settling snow except for a few dustings.

Average max = 6.11c (highest = 9.2c on 24 Feb)

Average min = 1.53c (lowest = -3.3c on 11 Feb)

Mean = 3.82c

Dry days = 6

Precipitation days = 22 (of which wintry = 12!)

Rainfall = 102.5mm

Another exceptionally cold month, which would have been the coldest I've recorded by some way, had it not been for January. The nights were particularly cold, with nineteen separate air frosts. In fact, the warmest night still dropped to 1.3C.

Average daily maximum; 4.2C

Highest daily maximum; 7.8C (6th)

Lowest daily minimum; -6.8C

Mean temperature; 0.9C (12 year average; 3.0C)

Don't have enough reliable records to compare this month's stats directly against an average, but would guess that the outcome's around 1 deg C below average for this urban location.

Overall a cold February but nothing significant in terms of weather, some snow but mostly dull cloudy days. I would imagine there would be quite a contrast in temperatures compared to the Midlands which would hamper the low CET, I doubt the Feb Average will reflect the temperatures for much of the country.

The coldest February since 1991. Rather than containing a potent cold spell, it was just homogenously cold. No single day had a maximum temperature that was above the monthly average. Aside from the 24th and 25th, no other days recorded above 6°C. Apart from a few days, the minimum temperature was generally a couple degrees either side of freezing.

Strangely for such a cold month, snow only laid on the ground at 0900 on just a single day. The month was more characterised by frequent marginal and short-lasting snowfalls, with temporary coverings on six days. The largest accumulation was just 0.5cm on the 3rd. Like December and January, the month was rather wet (the wettest since 2002 in fact), meaning the winter as a whole finished with 161% of normal rainfall.

Overall, a cold but rather dull and wet February. It finished off the coldest winter since 1978/79 with three consecutive months more than 2°C below average and all with a mean below 3°C. It was also the first January/February combination not to reach double figures since I began recording.

Statistics for Cleadon, Feb 2010, and comparisons with estimated 1971-2000 averages:

Mean max 5.2°C (-1.9°C)

Mean min -0.1°C (-1.8°C)

Mean temp 2.6°C (-1.8°C)

Highest maximum 6.8°C (12th)

Lowest minimum -4.6°C (21st)

Precipitation: 72mm (185%)

Wettest day: 26th (28mm)

Air frosts: 15

Days of sleet/snow falling: 12

Days of >50% snow cover at 0900: 2

Days of hail: 3

Days of fog at 0900: 1

It didn't seem like an exceptionally cold month, due to the severity of the previous two months, and the tendency for homogeneity rather than any outbreaks of particularly severe cold- in fact no day managed to reach the estimated LTA maximum of 7.1C! Yet it was about as cold as February 1994 (easily beating the other cold one in 1996) and the temperature anomaly was similar to that for December and January. The total of 15 air frosts also set a new February record.

The month was characterised by frequent snowfalls but minimal accumulations, as it contained a large number of marginal snow events which depended on altitude and distance from the coast- there were only 2 days with >50% cover, but a further 6 days had <50% cover. The first two-thirds of the month were quite dry but due to the persistent frontal rain towards the end of the month it ended up very wet, the wettest February since 2001.

Winter 2009/10 Stats:

Mean max 4.9°C (-2.1°C)

Mean min 0.1°C (-1.8°C)

Mean temp 2.5°C (-2.0°C)

Air frosts: 43

Days of sleet/snow falling: 36

Days of snow lying (>50% cover at 0900): 27

Precipitation: 222mm (148%)

This was more than 1°C colder than the next coldest winter since I began recording (1995/96) and almost doubled the previous record for snow cover in a winter quarter (1995/96, 15 days).

The winter ended up very wet, but this is almost certainly quite a localised statistic as Cleadon was hit by very localised snowfalls on the 8th/9th and 29th/30th January, resulting in snow depths of 24cm and 16cm respectively.

Overall, almost certainly the most notable winter for snow at this location since 1978/79, particularly in view of those two unusually deep snowfalls (plus a 12cm snowfall in 12 hours into New Year's Day) though for intensity of cold and persistence of snow cover it was probably exceeded in 1985/86 due to that exceptionally "easterly" February.

Surprisingly high IMO - mine was -9.3C on the 7th though one fairly close by got to -13C and Leuchars on the coast got to -8C. In fact last month my minimum was -7C on the 23rd. I suppose with your location so close to the east coast with little altitude was often prone to coastal modification from the predominantly easterly-type winds while Scotland was kept generally clearer due to high pressure sitting over us more often?

Here we don't get particularly cold nights, even though we are central with elevation. Lowest this winter has been -7.c which isn't that cold compared to nearby places (York/Manchester) getting down to -14.c, I can never understand why Leeds never gets cold nights, even when we are forecast lows of -10.c we never achieve it.

Upland areas, despite being colder overall, often see a surprising lack of notable low minima relative to nearby lowland areas. This is because on cold clear nights inversions result where cold air accumulates in the valleys and the hilltops by comparison are relatively warm. Terminal Moraine at his cold snowy location rarely sees particularly low minima.

The lowest for the 2009/10 season at Cleadon was -7.4C early on the 8th January, the lowest since the 4th March 2001.

Thanks, but even in low lying areas of Leeds (50m) the lowest achieved this winter is-6.c which again falls pale in comparison to areas very nearby.

Yes it makes a big difference, Im around 9 miles from the coast here so low minima are relatively rare. In fact, since 1982 we've had minima of -5C or below just 41 times. The frequency has dropped markedly in recent years aswell, happening only three times since December 1995.

It takes a very special setup here to get very cold temperatures. 29th December 1995 managed -11.3C and 10th February 1986 achieved -12.1C (the coldest Ive recorded). Temperatures like that here usually require still conditions, snowcover, no onshore breeze and lots of stagnant cold air.

Last winter the lowest minimum was -5.9C on 20th December (coldest for 14 years). On only 6 more occasions were temperatures lower than -3C recorded during the winter.

Surprisingly I'm also around 9 miles from the coast, but it seems that the slightly higher latitude and a fair bit more shelter from winds (basically anything north of ENE hits the Grampians along with the two 500m asl hills to the southwest) make a huge difference in minima.

Interesting that I'm just a few miles from the coast at the nearest point but it doesn't usually seem to effect my minimums, I think this is partly due to there being a hill 'barrier' in the way and the fact I'm in a river valley, which reaches the sea about 5-6 miles to the south a bit further away. If its calm and clear I usually record mins comparable to other places around and sometimes lower than most places around here, e.g -11.7°C and -12.2°C in January, -9.0°C in Jan last year and -4.9°C this Friday just gone. A breeze has kept mins up for the last couple of days though.

February 2010 stats for here. (Small village of Harpord in East Devon)

Generally quite a cool month coming in slightly below average although there were no notable low mins, due to bits of cloud or a breeze when the chances were there. with Feb 08 and Feb 09 having a lower lowest min (my data starts in Oct 2007) Quite a cloudy and damp second half to the month after a quite sunny and quite cold spell just before mid month if I remember correctly.
