There were severe and very damaging frosts during the latter half of March 1899 destroying fruit blossom and vegetation that were advanced due to the mild winter.

Some reports from the time called it the coldest weather since February 1895.

Here are the minima that was recorded

21st March 1899

Camden Square: -6.7C

Tenterden: -6.1C

Norwich: -10.0C

22nd March 1899

Bury St Edmunds: -9.4C

Winslow: -10.0C

24th March 1899

Braemar: -16.1C

Snow fell in a number of places

Buxton's lowest that month was -7.8c on the 24th. That's pretty low for the end of March, even in an upland hollow, but it was beaten two years later by -8.4c on the 27th in 1901 and again in 1919 with -10.0c on the 23rd.
