March 2010, statistics and summary for Lampeter, Ceredigion

Cold, dry and very frosty first half; mild and unsettled second half, cold wintry end though.

1-16th: Winter kept up its frosty grip, with 12 of the first 16 nights seeing air frost, these severe at times, the lowest being -7.1c on the 5th. It was a largely dry and sunny spell too, winds between east and north, and maxima around average, although some days were rather cold. Snow patches remaining from January still visible on nearby hills.

17th- 29th: A complete switch to mild/ very mild conditions and with rain at times. Winds now from the south or south-west, dry sunny spells at a premium, and with only a few slight frosts. The lows were slow- moving and often to the west of the UK, with winds not so strong at least.

30th- 31st: Turned much colder 30th, with rain and sleet. Very cold and windy last day of March, maximum of just 4.5c was the lowest of the month.

    Mean minima 1-16th: -3.3c

Mean minima 17th- 31st: 5.1c which shows how temperatures completely switched mid month!

A very delayed Spring this in terms of nature- Daffs only just out by the months end, very few hedgerows started to break into leaf yet, let alone any trees. Grass only slowly growing now, it was brown/ yellow until mid month.

All but 2mm of the month's rain fell from the 18th, and brought the total to average.

Definitely a month of two halfs. The first half was dry and pretty sunny with many days being mostly or completely sunny giving what must have been well above average sunshine, Although usually feeling quite cool or cold. There was no rain measured by the weather station (apart from dew or frost melt) until the 17th! Then the second half was quite unsettled with rain on most days. The 4th-5th was quite a cold night for March, although we missed out when much of the country was lower on the nights into the 7th and 8th due to more of a breeze here. There were not many warmer spring-like days here.

    Mean max: 10.1°C, 50.1F
