Unrest near Santorini as earth quake swarm which looks to be near the Kolumbo volcano.

Enjoyed my trip to Santorini a few years ago.  Visually breath taking.  The last eruption within the massive caldera was in 1950.

The Greek authorities are suggesting the earthquakes near Santorini have nothing to do with potential volcanic activity. It is related to plate tectonics.  The area of earthquake activity seems to be well away from plate margins.

This area has the Santorini-Amorgos fault zone running through it was doesn’t form part of the plate boundary and this fault zone generated a 7.7mg earthquake last century I think.

Also I’ve seen reports Santorini is now seeing some uplift although it’s not clear whether it’s magmatic or just the continual slipping of the fault.

Change of plan, uplift has happened, could be magmatic....

matty40s There also apears to be a 6.7km magma dyke/tunnel under there.

Not volcanic just tectonic along know fault lines. However since there  a volcano that wiped out the Minoan civilisation nearby some like to make alarming videos on youtube.

Of course a huge quake could produce a Tsutsumi.

What's happening near Santorini is certainly fascinating, although it must be awful for the people who's livelihoods are dependent on tourism.

Everything I have read suggests that the experts consider this to be tectonic in nature. The basis for that assumption appears to be that most of the activity is not centred under one of the volcanos, Santorini or Kolumbo. They do suggest that the activity is very unusual and they can't fully explain it.

I am very sceptical. The claim that it is tectonic activity seems to be based upon there being no evidence it is otherwise. I am reminded of other scientific claims where there is no evidence, e.g. that wearing masks does not limit the spread of Covid! To my untrained eye the activity looks very much like the kind of earthquake swarm that occurs when magma is on the move. Could it be that there is a previously unidentified volcano under the sea, or even a new one being born?

The volcano that destroyed Thera erupted roughly 3,500 years ago. Some scholars believe that this massive volcanic blast, one of the strongest in recorded history, was responsible for wiping out Minoan culture, on the island of Crete, directly to the south. And Professor Hans Goedicke, of Johns Hopkins University, goes so far as to argue that the eruption caused a massive tidal-like wave that traversed the Mediterranean, drowned the Egyptian army that was in hot pursuit of the fleeing Israelites during the Exodus and was forever preserved in the Bible as the parting of the Red Sea.

Biblical stuff it about to happen again..

Snowyowl9 There has always been lots of theories about how the Red Sea is supposed to have parted.

Don Hull Can't see much movement of people in a 63 mph winds. Most likely they would be seeking shelter on both sides.  The Pillar of Fire could be Santorini erupting however that's disputed due to timings.

Earthquakes still ongoing but the cluster has moved slightly NE today. Meanwhile we wait for the next Iceland eruption although the weathers so bad we probably couldn't see it right now anyway.

The PIT Rather interesting what is going on in the vicinity of Santorini as in my book it is slightly unusual.
