Yes some record breaking minimum temperatures recorded overnight, according to BBC weather, -4.2c at Topcliffe in Yorkshire, the coldest May night for 15 years i think she said. -3.3c at Santon Downham, eastern Enland, and -3.1c at Shap Northwest England.

-6.6c was recorded somewhere up north, possibly Scotland! but I missed the location.

Enough breaks in the cloud overnight to allow for a ground frost. The temperature fell to 2.3c, with –0.6c on the grass. Overcast with light showery rain to start this morning.

Yesterday:

Cloud and outbreaks of light rain overnight kept away an air frost. Though the cloud cleared sufficiently through the early hours and allowed the temperature to dip low enough for a touch of ground frost. Low 2.8c and –0.3c on the grass.

Bright with sunny spells up to observation.

The day saw further sunny spells, though with showers in the vicinity, some of hail. It was quite pleasant during the afternoon in the sunshine, and felt warmer than the maximum temperature of 13.0c, as the wind was mostly light, though when showers passed close by, there was a rapid fall in temperature. The early evening became overcast with a few spots of rain.

An exceptionally cold night, dropped to -1.6c. Currently sunny and 11.7c.

-1.6 must be close to the long-term record for May in Reading. I guess you're further out from the town centre than I am, OP? My location is close to the town centre and gets some of the urban heat island effect.

In the meantime, here at work in Basingstoke our first shower of the day has just started and I think there's a hint of hail in it.

I'm in the outskirts Stargazer, it is usually much colder then right in the centre where all the cars and building heat is released overnight. I don't think there is an official station for Reading aside from the University. I can't find anything at all.

It also depends what sensor and where it's position. I have a grounded sensor that measures the air temperature at ground level and a sensor that measures the air temperature from around 15M. It was 2.1c when the 15M sensor was recording -1.6c at around 6ish.

In summer 2006 when the ground sensor is exposed to sunlight it recorded 46c...then the batteries started leaking acid haha.

Here in Heybrook Bay the temp today has rocketed to the dizzy heights of 9.8c. However compared to this time yesterday (7.2c) this is tropical.

Certainly one of the coldest spells in May here for a number of years. Sunny mind.

10.4C in Buxton, after a low of 0.9C. Showers are staying away, and I hope they do as they will bugger up the temperature.
