surely you've had your year's worth of storm fixes in the States? :)

quite a cluster of sferics in the North Sea currently, why do storms seem to last longer over a cold sea than land recently?

Indeed - you would have thought that wouldn't you :shok:

However amazing the storms were in the US, there is something that bit more satisfying when they are at home :good: Furthermore, I've been back nearly 3 weeks now, so the craving is starting to creep lol

Heads up for those up north, chance of a thunderstorm through the afternoon and early evening, with some quite steep lapse rates under an upper cold pool spreading SE across Scotland:

Convection really taking off up here, some hefty showers about to hit Tyne & Wear and certainly wouldn't rule out a crack of thunder or two.

Aircraft coming into Newcastle airport are taking unusual paths avoiding some of the larger cells..

I am quite a novice when it comes to this weather lark but could someone tell me if these are showers moving SEwards http://www.sat24.com/gb

ESE I would say at present as opposed to SE ( sorry to be pedantic but its quite crucial if you're trying to work out where they are going to hit)...quite a pronounced rotation around the LP too which is nice to see :)

Not from those charts unfortunately, nimbilus. Next week will introduce upper ridging from south-west of the UK, with very little instability and poor surface to upper temperature contrasts progged by GFS. For now, there is nothing suggestive of thunderstorms showing from the models for the foreseeable future.

With regret I have to agree with Weather09 - what's more I suspect it'll be quite cloudy furthest from the HP system (East coast) as there'll be a N/NE breeze coming in off the N Sea, bringing cooler temperatures, more cloud and thus inhibiting any heating which my needed to get an storm going in the first place...not looking promising storm wise IMO :)

Hail was reported here around the same time but the rain was by no means torrential although large rain drops was evident which suggested to me that you were the "lucky" one being under the main core of the shower whilst i must of just caught the edge of it.

If I saw 2700 j/kg CAPE realised over England, I'll run around town naked. Unlikely GFS!

Just a note about last night's convergence zone in the area - there was pretty sustained very heavy/torrential rain from 22.00-23.30 with quite strong gusty winds at times. All in all - it left a solid 14mm in the rain guage, just what the garden needs. Sadly, no thunder, lightning or hail.
