A few sferics now showing up over in West Wales, near the coast....as Nick posted earlier today, some parts might see the odd elevated storm embedded within the front as it pushes west to east overnight.....From a midlands point of view, there's an area of heavy rain developing over mid wales that should affect the West Midlands in the next hour or so...I've been watching this particular area develop over the past 3 hours...Cold cloud tops & deep clouds showing up nicely on sat24 infra-red as well as the sat24 visible image (well before it got dark...lol)

doh! now the area is losing its intensity over the past 2 frames.....even so, should be some welcome rainfall for our parched gardens tonight in our neck of the woods

You could be right, it's raining in Shropshire. It started just as I crossed the county border travelling West from the Black Country.

It felt very warm stepping outside from the AC of the car into the rain. Is it set to get heavier then?

Didn't realise there was any risk tonight until just now when I checked the GFS charts.

Looking quite promising overnight and into the early hours...

Considering how rare storms are up here, I've been woken a few times by thunder between about 4 and 8am in recent years, so I've got a bit of hope.

Have issued a storm forecast for potential of some embedded elevated storms across Wales and N England tonight/Tuesday:

The neighbours was looking at me like, what the heck are you doing lol.

Just started raining ever so slightly went out for a fag and just had my head tilted back looking into the sky in the middle of the front garden. Welcome rainfall, + it will be good for a fish tomorrow. The carp have just been on top basking in the sun, totally put off from feeding in the heat. So when I go tomorrow bright and early I may catch some :D

I would say the chances of thunderstorms breaking out tonight are rather low for my area, I favour parts of Wales, Central N england and the far NE (Tyne/County D) etc..

Outside chance of me catching something, but i think most of the precipitation will have passed through here by the time the CAPE values are at their greatest, with no trigger (heat/surface heating)/solar, just heavy rain/showers me thinks.

Would love to be proven wrong though.

Yes, 12z GFS & now 18z GFS show quite favourable conditions for elevated thunderstorms overnight into tomorrow morning for the Midlands & Wales, quite at odds with the 15z NMM, which doesnt really want to play ball

Somewhat off topic, but I've just been sat out in the garden these past 15 mins getting absolutely soaked...Normally I'd be classed as bonkers doing that, but it felt wonderful as it got so damned humid this evening!

Unlikely but the past few NMM runs break out some PPN around here tomorrow morning along with some good storm ingredients. Who knows?

Even here in the heart of the instability, local conditions will prevent thunderstorms from occurring around my area. The dewpoints are low compared to surrounding areas and it does feel distinctly chilly and dry in the air despite earlier rain.

A great lesson in how topography can destroy instability for low lying areas to the lee of a hill/mountain range.

The Wirral in that sense is one of the worst areas to live for anyone with a storm interest.

Evening

Swear I just saw a flash, nothing but broken stratus in the area and nobody has owned up to setting off a camera, no cars or people in the road, what else would light up the houses so briefly?

Thunder dosen't only happen when it rains.

But I can see in the moonlight no evidence of any deep clouds, very mysterious. It was bright enough to light the surrounding buildings and gardens.

Must be seeing things mate, unless it was a Red sprite "discharges to the ionosphere". Which is like UBER rare.

Starting to pick up a bit on the Netweather lightning detector, quite a few sferics recently the Irish Sea.

Should be some around South Cumbria and Lancashire before too long.

Got another shower heading here now so I'm off the bed to listen, quite optimistic of being woken by thunder or even just a downpour in the next few hours.

Lancashire reporting in, got a storm over me at the moment with weak electrical activity and light to moderate precipitation though the lightning is becoming more intense. It is IC / sheet variety at the moment.

Same here Tim, no precip (unless it happened before I woke!) but a few nice flashes of lightning & some thunder.

Reminds me of that night last year when something similar happened unexpectedly

Aye I was catching up with the new true blood series when this came from nowhere, been out the back having a smoke watching it since. It has rapidly weakened again now and has moved north east though it gave me a couple of nice IC bolts as it departed, must have been locally produced activity caused by the hills.

I can see another CB to my southwest in the moonlight though I'm not expecting anything more, but I can hope..
