Quite an intense storm here in lancashire at 3am this morning, intense rain and frequent lightning which caused a power outage in the area, was quite surreal to see the streets in total darkness except for the frequent flashes of lightning!!

Storm passed by 3-40am but has caused flooding in the region!!!

Bah!.....spent most of the night watching radars, only to see all storm activity pass around my area.....damned frustrating, and I'm still firmly entrenched in the NSC 2010.... :whistling:

Seems to be a funny thing about the Northwest of England. When t/storms are forecast nothing happens. When nothing is generally forecast we seem to get something unexpectedly.

Has happened the last 2 or 3 storms but I'm not complaining!

Turned out quite stormy, as predicted, across parts of N England and N Wales during the early hours this morning:

sf_na_1v.gif

Quite a potent storm developed across Lincs Wolds around 6am this morning on the back edge of the cold front now clearing E Anglia and SE England.

Storm potential now easing as stronger upper forcing moves on east across the N Sea.

Indeed. I think the West Midlands (especially Staffs and West Mids) is fast becoming the last place to see a proper storm. Any of those have just died out on us before. :whistling:

A shower out of nowhere is soaking somewhere just to my North East!

Was an interesting early morning - at around 03:30 I had a heavy, gusty shower, which then moved on north-east and went on to produce sferics across parts of east Midlands. Currently got a heavy shower a few miles to my south - nice dark cloud base covering the southern skyline. Nice to see parts of northern England got some storms last night!

That shower just passed to our South. Apart from a damp ground i reckon we had very little measurable rainfall here especially as we missed that heavy shower.

I always have my fingers crossed for you Jane Louise, but I'm not sure you are in an area with the best possibilities today...

GFS builds some SBCAPE this afternoon across East Anglia and other parts of eastern/southern England, due to a humid boundary layer - with dew points typically 17-18C currently across southern/eastern England. However, there's quite strong capping in place now due to post frontal/trough subsidence and also warming uppers - so think it unlikely any storms will develop, perhaps some isolated heavy showers developing as daytime max temps are reached in sunshine.

It's just good to see some decent convection sprouting up after so long without it, and also after a dull, humid, drizzly morning that turned tropical feeling with hot sunshine and persistent drizzle!

We had torrential rain here, which was needed after almost the whole month without even a spot of drizzle.

But no storms to my knowledge. Unless it was when I was asleep.

Just logged on for first time today. Yeh good storm about half 3 here in Bingley (West Yorks) numerous bouts of forked lightening and several loud cracks of thunder. Spoke to my mate at work and he swore main activity was above his house, about 5 mile away from me.

Indeed, thunderstorm activity associated with fronts is quite common up here even when the conditions don't favour thunderstorm activity.

Like those we got those days in 2003 when if I remember correctly, the cape never rose above 300 anywhere. Another good one was that day in the early 90s (I forget which exactly, I think it was 93 or 94) when it started thundering at around 11:00 AM and continued with storm after storm until around 8:00 PM, again this was due to a cold front.

There seems to be a shower becoming stronger just north of me nr southampton, any ideas what it could turn into? or just remain a shower?

its a cumulonimbus which is nice to see rather than cirrus all the time
