Nick, I have tried PMing you but your inbox must be full, plus an email to the address in your profile was rebounded.

So I have to ask you here, where is that lightning chart from please?

It reminds me of the old Wetterzentrale 24 hour lightning detector.

Thanks.

Sorry Andy, have now cleared inbox a bit.

The lightning chart is from an Icelandic National Weather Site, it uses MetO Atd detector.

As Nick F's updated suggested, some convection has sprouted up around Norwich but showers look pretty isolated. There's a cumulonimbus just to the SE at the moment showing up as a bright but small echo on the radar.

There is however a possibility of some thundery rain spreading from the south during the middle part of next week.

I saw some impressive anvils shoot up to the south of Norwich earlier- I'm guessing that's what you ended up underneath!

Continuing signals from ECM 12z on heights building to our east during the middle part of next week, with upper Low moving east from Atlantic stalling NW/WNW of UK pulling in a very warm southerly draw from Spain during the period. So this will probably be where the Met Office are getting the idea of 'thundery rain' pushing up from the south. There are, however, clear disagreement with this scenario from the GFS, which doesn't disrupt the upper Low and instead sends it towards the UK bringing in a less unstable westerly flow.

ECM and GFS 12z run scenarios for mid-next week:

EDIT: I've just shifted some posts to the Storm Forecast thread as I think they are worth keeping track of in there for the next couple of days :)

Who knows...I've noticed the last few years, that thundery plume events set up in a very short time frame, rather than being visible a week in advance. I remember on more than one occasion, days where uncharted thundery lows develop over France and throw storms our way in a NW direction...those which show up days/weeks in advance invariably shunt Eastwards over time or are wiped out completely.

I think that the potential for some thundery outbreaks in the next couple of days is intriguing. Granted, at the moment it appears only the SE quarter MAY see some action, but should this shift slightly West/East then of course its an entirely different scenario.

In answer to your question, Pat...I don't hold out much hope for those specific charts no, lol - BUT, I'm always encouraged by signs of warm/humid unstable air flows, which could be on the cards both this week and next

Even that hangs in the lap of the Gods!!!

As Nick said in the forecast thread, we are really clutching at straws at the moment, but we don't even have the French coast imports to get damp over this year! :D
