Forget the Natural History Museum, I have the entire collection of British arachnids here in my house !!

For some strange reason I found myself with a Hoover in my hand (I know my place !!)earlier today. The "Ayatollah" had left me strict instructions before leaving for the hairdresser's, mainly concerning "turning that rugby off and tidy up" etc etc. I could not believe the amount of cobweb that's built up in one week !! Talk about a harbinger of Autumn - this is right up there with a courtyard full of leaves and a room full of Daddy Longlegs. August tomorrow - you bet it is !

    Funny you should say that...

I spotted a spider building a web below the sun visor in the van whilst on the motorway. Don't know where it came from but it isn't staying there.

This evening, there was a spider on the inside of my curtains in my bedroom. It vanished when I came to look for it.

Why did I have to see that picture ARGH!!!! I'm not going to be leaving my room all day and night now because of that lol. I'd love to be able to understand these creatures, but we just don't get along at all. If only "God" could have made these things pretty like Butterflies.

Haha best thing to do is challenge your fear! I have never understood why some people have such a fear for them. I don't mind the large spiders but not to keen on those small ones. Since getting bitten by a snake a few years ago (and endured massive swelling as a result) I'm less keen on them.

challenge you fear?? yeah right!!! i am super scared of spiders  not the small ones, but anything larger than a 20p piece and i go to pieces. the only thing i confront a spider with is the hoover or a broom.

autumn is a fantastic season, but i dread the period where it starts to cool down enough for the spiders to start seeking the warmth of the house

    snakes? no problem :lazy:

I can't stand the bloody things. I have such a phobia that if discovered one in my bedroom that unfortunately got away I wouldn't sleep in the room until I killed it. Dreading the next 8 weeks because the gigantic house spider tends to arrive in my flat!

I was extremely shocked this year that there were two HUGE housespiders in March! of all times, i turned around one evening and panicked seeing its beastly features so killed it quickly and then another one came through under the door just as big, horrible things, the biggest ones usually apepar around the end of August in this house.

Have a pile if bricks in the bark yard covered in webs and is a haven for large spiders. Tap on the web and big black spider shoots out! As soon as ther nights get chilly it will probably want to come in doors.

    oh cheers mate!!!

i find anything that moves as fast as those un-natural

What I find strange is despite my dislike of spiders I seem to enjoy watching videos and one of my favourite movies is Arachnophobia. Strange how some of us enjoy being scared but I suppose this is why theme parks such as Alton Towers are so popular.

Arghhhh! stop posting the picture in replies

going back to TEITS's post, i have no problem looking at pictures or on TV/Film when it comes to spiders. or anything else come to that. i do know someone who gets very very ill at even the picture of a snake. and has even fainted when someone who knew of his phobia teased him that they had a snake in a box they had bought to show everyone.

actually my phobia or fear started when i was teased by my elder brother when i was very young. he would pick big house spiders up and chase me with them in his hand. scared the living daylights out of me

That video of that spider is just about the most horrific image of spiders I've seen, bar one!

Check this out below - sod walking into that web......

Type in google - golden orb weaver eating bird......

This is up there with the most horrific images of spiders IMO!

Yep a type of huntsman AKA 'crab spider' it's also found in the UK. If you want to look for one get to the East or South of England (where it's generally warmer) and get yourself near to a brook with lots of growth weed. When it gets cooler by September/October they tend to make camp in your house to get out of the dampness.

There are a few spiders that will give you a nip but there are no native spiders that are poisonous in the UK (naturally venomous like all spiders)

Speaking of spiders lol, i've just been out the back clearing away some plants that were on their last legs and the amout of spiders that were there was insane, a fair few daddy longlegs and some others that were fairly big, about the size of a 50p  and i wasn't too happy lol. Some of the biggest ones we get here tend to stay in the garage, we have had some fairly big black hairy spiders in there! also the same in the shed . One of the biggest i have see, was in a pic my step dad took years ago of a spider drinking out of a cat bowl! altho i can't find the pic atm but will try and find it!

With the exception of the false widow spider which is poisonous, but is not native to the UK. It is however spreading across Southern England, more so in the SW, presumably because the winters don't get quite as cold as the SE. Nevertheless, based on what I have read, they are doing well for themselves so far. The bites are equivalent to that of a wasp sting - if you're hypersensitive, it can kill, but otherwise a painful rash is the usual result from a false widow bite.

Another far more scary prospect is the warning issued by the RSPCA last week, relating to venomous tarantulas which it would appear escaped captivity recently. There are doubts about how well they (two apparently) will survive during the winter months, but lets just hope that neither is a pregnant female, neither has laid eggs here, and neither do too well in dealing with the winter!! Brrr!!

In respect of snakes though, I find them intriguing! Saw an adder a few years ago - casually slithered past outside the caravan in Dymchurch, and I followed it with intrigue until I lost in the high grass around the dykes (careful!)

Those sort of spiders wouldn't survive even winters like 2006/2007. It's far to cold for the ones that escape captivity. I suppose if they found a house to live in they would. Makes you think how these spiders manage to escape from captivity.

An Adder bit me a few years ago. Not the sort of thing you'd like to experience being quarantined by the NHS and tested on lol.

Im sure I heard or read that all UK spiders are venomous but they aren't a risk because their fangs cannot penetrate our skins.

ALL spiders in the world are venomous TEITS without the venom they wouldn't be able to kill their prey. Yes you're right most in the UK don't have strong enough fangs to bite through skin, even if they did their toxions are so weak it would be no more than a sore result. We do have the fake black widow is part of the steatoda species. I don't think it has the red hourglass symbol on its belly found in the genuine black widow.
