I think ridging from the north will inhibit any showers forming after midday here in West Yorkshire, which probably means thundery activity is unlikely for me here.

A few sites are showing the thunder risk being as far north as Yorkshire but others (Met office/BBC)keep it Midlands southwards. Anyone have any idea of the northern limit of storms today as would travel if the limit is not too far away.

Also, are there any indications of where wind convergence is likely to be. I have looked on GFS wind charts and there doesn't look to be any. I was under the impression this would be the main aid for storms today :nonono:

From the TORRO convective discussion:

In addition, fine-mesh models depict a complicated surface wind pattern, especially close to the WSW'ward moving trough, but also along the south coast of England. Larger scale models also indicated a surface convergence zone close to the south coast of England. Low LCLs along with surface convergence mean that funnels and a few weak tornadoes are possible today, especially across the southern half of the area.

Forecaster: RPK

The MetO Surface charts show the trough aligned from the South coast North up to the Peak District by midday. Maybe not too far to drive!

We could actually do without it today with Eastbourne Airborne on for the remainder of the weekend. But lets hope the rain also brings a few claps of thunder for the lucky few! :)

Explosive activity just inland from Deal/Dover in past 20 mins.

It's following the 500HPA wind vectors which shows it to go inland an the tip of it will reach london :good: should stay along the south coast mainly, then it will go south towards france :)

I haven't been following the weather very intently recently, because it hasn't been all that interesting. But where did all this potential come from? This sounds exciting and I hope the potential is realised :-D

Estofex have a level 1 for us:

http://www.estofex.org/

...England and NW France...

The upper trough and weak surface winds provide convergence zones with high vertical vorticity which can be spun up by convective updrafts in the humid airmass (e.g. 00Z Herstmonceux, Trappes, Camborne, De Bilt soundings) while not being disturbed by vertical shear or mixing/entrainment of the superadiabatic surface layer. Land/waterspouts and funnel clouds are therefore likely.

Its very cold today ( almost heating time ) , Where these showers are gonna come from is anybodys guess...

Im hoping that band of rain thats moved south isnt it....

woah that stuff coming my way from the east could bring a serious amount of rain

It's dropped a maximum of 14mm in the past hour in some localities to the south of Canterbury, but it's taking forever to move anywhere, and it's still not thundery yet either.

Tony Gilbert from UKWW has the West Midlands for stronger convection today and near the south coast as the better place to see a weak tornado. :)

do u reckon it could become thundery then? it didn't think so! i thought it could lose some intensity as it comes inland!

what's it like down in stourbridge Luke?.....Its very murky here in Penkridge, a lot of low cloud, but signs that it's trying to break up....Sat24 is showing hints of clearer skies and convection starting to occur to the NE of our region
