what's it like down in stourbridge Luke?.....Its very murky here in Penkridge, a lot of low cloud, but signs that it's trying to break up....Sat24 is showing hints of clearer skies and convection starting to occur to the NE of our region

The sun is already poking through the cloud here. :)

The cloud is certainly beginning to break up i think. Clouds looked quite dark earlier but probably related to the rain overnight.

Best of luck for today!

Key time about 2-5pm today. :good:

Nice to see i'm in the warning area today! although still not expecting anything. Will most of the action be across the Midlands and Southern England?

Good sunny spells here now. Hopefully that will pick the temps up and get that convection cooking. Temps are already about 17c or so in the East where the sun has been out longest.

51% chance of a storm today. Can't see it. I don't think any precip will make it this far West.

Ok i am going to target the area to the south of Manchester into Staffordshire and the NW Midlands in the hope of catching something this afternoon.

I dont want to write today off yet either but the radar was looking more promising a few hours ago than it is now. Low surface heating levels are expected, forcing is forecast to come from cz/troughs and at least one trough is present so the distinct lack of activity is puzzling to me. NW radar overlay has the main area of CAPE still off the East coast and reluctant to build inland, perhaps a bit of solar energy would help start things off. If the murk hangs on it looks like it could be a total drizzle-out!

Edit: Thanks Neil, seems the cover is breaking just a little in some places so Ill be patient :lazy:

Although the south/south east coast is looking the best bet the temps are being held way back by all this cloud , temps need to reach 18c to get those storms going but in most areas it's about 14c

ukww - Dave

My concern would be lack of surface heating today..we need about 18C to get Cb's developing but we may struggle to get even this given the amount of clag around..so will need the xtra factor (sorry) to get it going.. convergence etc. Heathrow is reporting Cb atm (with 15C)

Edit- having said that 06Z GFS et al is keen to prog 19C widely today with 7-10mm falling 12-18Z widely across many areas so we shall see. I may well be being too pessimistic in my assessment above. It is mid August after all !

Sun is out here. I forsee a day of sunny intervals with the occasional shower. 51% storm risk may be being shown on the Net Weather forecasts, but I don't buy it. Enjoy your storms those of you in the East.

Interesting temperatures here, it's jumped from 14.4c an hour ago to 16.8c, so its moving in the correct way.

Humidity also jumped from 88 to 92% in the same period.

The lack of activity I would put down to the fact that it's only just gone past 12:00. Satellite is showing sufficient clouds breaking from the E and NE, and this will allow good solar input into mid-late afternoon; this is when instability builds.

Yar I see it now, only wondered because this time yesterday storms were already underway, but there hadnt been the overnight rain we had last night

Agree with Weather 09.

It will be more a case of diurnal/convective heating that will beef up these showers. If the cloud canopy persists then we'll see little, if anything apart from moderate rain showers in my reckoning.

But a METO weather warning is out for much of the south and east of England. (Midlands too! ) Let's see how it pans out. :lazy:

Starting to look thundery in the Alps, but the supercells look to be moving into Italy rather than France.
