Well the plume of very hot air from Africa has truly arrived here in sw France. Some very notable temps already recorded for this early in the day. Biarritz normally moderated by the Atlantic is benefiting from a slight fohn effect and at 10am was 31c! We've just hit 30c here with a very light se flow. Really pretty amazing temps given the length of the days now towards the end of August. I suppose we should be grateful that this didn't occur in late July otherwise temps could have rocketed to record levels. I'm sure however that some favoured locations will reach 40c today!

Incredibly at midday the temp here is 35.4c! Very light se flow, given temp readings from Spain this is quite a localized pool of extremely hot air, together with a small fohn effect I'm pretty sure 40c will easily be reached further east. It would be incredible if some temperature records were broken this late into the summer.

Blimey Nick, that is hot, 40c :( that’s getting in to the dangerous category, the nearest I’ve been to that kind of temperature is in a sauna. Currently here, it’s only 13c.

I hope you have air conditioning!

In Cork it's mostly sunny, 18C, RH 58% and a light northerly breeze, pretty much perfect summer weather for me. Why couldn't the last 3 months have been like this!?

Very heavy rain last night, you could hear it pounding relentlessly against the window, but this turned steadily patchier into this morning.

Much drier now, and even though it is still cloudy, it really is a relief to see the end to the rain.

Suffice to say WE DON'T WANT ANY MORE RAIN.

Feeling very autumnal today, top temperature 13.9c from the AWS, which looks like being the lowest August maximum temperature since local records began back in 1991, haven’t yet looked at my official instruments which are in a more exposed area, so today’s maximum could be even lower. The previous lowest is 14.2c back in 1993. But there is time for this record to be spoiled, as the end of the 24 hour period does not finish until 10am BST tomorrow.

.....................................................................

After a wet night, a wet and windy start, with continuous light to moderate rain and heavy drizzle. The morning and a good part of the afternoon continued cool and wet with continued light to moderate drizzle accompanied with a fresh north-easterly wind, the drizzle died away from mid afternoon, but it stayed overcast and dull.
