45% Chance of a white Christmas

White Christmas Forecast Issued: 2010-11-20 12:50:00

Next Forecast: 2010-11-24 22:00:00

Synopsis

This update brings an increased risk of at least a flake falling on Christmas day to pretty much everywhere across the country. Since the last update the long range charts have certainly trended to cold weather being in place for much of the country on the big day with the wind originating from a North/North Easterly direction especially. While the charts will continue to flip around, it is a change from the constant mild then cold then mild output. Focusing on the recent trend only, showers, perhaps wintry would be most likely with coasts seeing the highest frequency of showers. Some inland also but more sunshine on offer here. In addition to this we have considered the recent synoptics being shown for Late November/Early December as a notable cold spell for the time of year especially is forecast thanks to blocking occurring over Greenland. Such blocking patterns can be hard to shift or can quite easily re appear thus a higher risk of cold spells happening. In summary we expect quite a cold Christmas day with showers, perhaps wintry and these most likely in the North and closer to coasts where the showers will be most frequent.

45% Chance of a white Christmas

White Christmas Forecast Issued: 2010-11-24 21:39:00

Next Forecast: 2010-11-28 22:00:00

Synopsis

Not too much change with this update with still a very good chance of at least somewhere recording that all important flake on the big day. The current trend is still for cold weather over the UK or very close by. A few milder runs have sneaked through which may show as a result on the next update if this continues but with the current projection of a cold December with the potential for Northern Blocking such as our current situation and still the majority of model runs hinting at something cold, the risks remain similar for this update. The current prediction is still for a showery theme, perhaps some longer spells of precipitation in places. Snow most likely in the North and East. A risk that milder air will nudge in from the South West. A possibly cold day overall but nothing exceptional probably.

Looks like some funny weather is on its way. The Big Freeze will end next Weekend and there will be battles between Cold air and the Atlantic from about the 6th-18th or so in December. I think there is a good chance of snow on Christmas and perhaps another Big Freeze.

Sorry for putting this update up Late

40% Chance of a white Christmas

White Christmas Forecast Issued: 2010-11-28 22:42:00

Next Forecast: 2010-12-01 22:00:00

Synopsis

A slight downgrade of risks on this update though nothing too significant. Long range model output continues to chop and change, perhaps with a trend towards milder weather on the big day recently. The actual weather on the day may depend on how the current cold spell lasts. If it does go soon, we may see a milder pattern for a while or colder weather very close and frequently returning. Dont forget many long range forecasts point towards a cold December. Based on the latest trend we currently expect a cool day with some showers or possibly longer spells of precipitation. This could be wintry especially in the North and East and on higher ground. Lower ground could be too mild for any wintry conditions. In summary, still lots of changes occurring and a long way to go in weather terms.
