This topic may have been discussed on this forum already - if so, please forgive me. Is it likely that there will be an extreme weather event on Friday January 7th? If you look at the BBC weather forecasts for that day, you will see that localities in Warwickshire and Worcestershire such as Birmingham, Leamington Spa or Worcester are supposed to have temperatures of 0 to 2 degrees, whereas for that same day BBC predicts for neighbouring Oxfordshire temperatures of 9 or 10 degrees. Further south and east the forecasted temperatures for Friday are also very high. Surely such a setup, with a jump of almost 10 degrees over the distance of a few miles, is likely to produce thunderstorms or at least strong winds? So far I have found BBC forecasts to be very reliable, but is this a blooper? Or is there really any other evidence to suggest that on Friday the boundaries of Warwickshire, Worcestershire and Oxfordshire may be in for something exciting?

I don't think there'll be anything particularly extreme. There's an area of rain and mild air moving up from the south on that day and as it meets an area of cold air it's likely to produce snow, at least temporarily, from the Midlands northward. There could be quite a bit of snow on the high ground before it turns to rain and a thaw sets in later in the day, at least if the GFS and ECM are to be believed. The thaw looks like being fairly short lived though as colder air will sweep southward again during Saturday.

I suppose there's always the chance that the mild air will not make it any further north than the north Midlands in which case anywhere north of there, up to central northern England will have a significant snowfall which will not immediately thaw.

It is certainly possible that were the temperature differences meet a huge snowfall would occur and thundersnow along the airmass mix, alot of moisture would turn into big snow laden clouds ,some areas should get advanced warning nearer thursday as these air masses can't be pinned exactly yet.
