yet another cloudy start after some clear spells overnight giving a ground frost with a low of 0.4C at the moment. It would be nice to see the sun!

looking for a little help here.

Photos of my pond today, not ripples on the water! Yes there is water on the surface but beneath is ice, 2-3cm thick perhaps more. I am puzzled as to how the ripple effect has occurred. There has been no running water since early December from the smaller pond just where the ripples are, that is frozen solid still. So what caused them, any ideas folks?

John, is the object beneath the surface, near the ripples, a pump?

If so I was wondering if air had escaped from the pump once it was turned off. If a series of bubbles had risen to the surface over a period of time during a period of severe frost it's conceivable that the water would have frozen in a ripple effect. For this to occur it would need an initial rapid freezing of the surface but with just enough water disturbance during the freezing for the ripple effect to occur.

If this is not the case it could be one for Journal of Meteorology.

A cold and cloudy day here but with some breaks in the sheet of Stcu allowing a little sunshine on the distant hillside after the sun had 'set' here. Below freezing all day with a f1 SW breeze.

thanks for the reply TM

I don't think so as the pump is about 2 oc' clock from where the ripples start.

The odd thing is I did not notice the effect until AFTER the snow had cleared off the surface, so I'm not sure if that had something to do with it. Even if it had I have no idea what may have caused it.

I might write to Bob at Weather and ask for it to go in a Weather issue with a request as to what may have caused it?
