Tropical Cyclone Alfred has slowed down on its way to the east coast of Australia. Brisbane, QLD and NSW are preparing for high winds, damaging waves, ongoing rainfall and storm surge leading to flooding.

1974 cyclones

Tropical Cyclone Pam 3 - 6 February 1974 Summary

Pam was a very large intense cyclone which passed 500 km to the east of Brisbane. However, a 0.68m storm surge was recorded on the Moreton Bay gauge and combined with a king tide, the high tide of 7 February on the gauge reached 3.13 m (a record at the time). This rise in sea level flooded Brisbane creeks at high tide and caused cancellation of some bus services. Along the open coast, the beaches were already severely eroded due to earlier cyclones and this amplified the effects of run up from the large waves generated by Pam. At Palm Beach residents had to abandon their houses and units as seawater drove over 6.2 metre boulder walls and surged through these premises.

Tropical Cyclone Zoe  6 - 13 March 1974  Summary

Zoe crossed the coast at Coolangatta and then recurved back out to sea. There was no significant wind damage however ,flooding was extensive with major floods in Brisbane creeks cutting main roads and some houses were flooded. Major flooding occurred in North New South Wales and 200 people were evacuated in Murwillumbah and 500 families were evacuated at Lismore. Landslides cut the main railway line in 4 places between Casino and Coffs Harbour. There was severe erosion along the Gold Coast beaches

I lived in Brisbane for a couple of years. There was 120mm in one 24hr period and I remember being amazed at how much rain it was.  Scary to think what 3 or 4 times that might do over 36-48hrs.

After walking down the gangway from the Australian navy ship that saved him, the Lithuanian fell to his knees in front of his wife, sobbing

Cyclone Alfred is the latest meteorological event to showcase people's lack of awareness to the ocean.
