CET is 4.1C to the 2nd

http://hadobs.metoffice.com/hadcet/cet_info_mean.html

Yesterday was 3.9C. Aparently the maximum was 6.5C, which seems a little high to me...

Minimum for today is down as -1.2C, lowest since Feb 1st.

Nothing overtly mild in the upcoming days, expecting the CET to be appreciably below the average by this time next week.

Will be interesting to compare with other cold starts to March such as 1996, 2001, 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2010.

Maxima do look preety suppressed for many highs of 8 degrees at best in the sunshine and for many 5's and 6's in the cloud, much colder than many saw during Feb, indeed I wouldn't be surprised if we record a colder first half to March than we saw during February.

It will be interesting if we get a cold first third of March without, on the face of it, appearing to have particularly cold synoptics over the UK. 850hPa temperatures are a little above average at the moment, highlighting the power of those inversions under high pressure.

Although full-on "sunshine and wintry showers" polar maritime incursions are looking increasingly unlikely in the near future, the GFS ensembles are trending below average after day 6.

March 1996 didn't begin particularly cold, it had quite a mild cloudy anticyclonic/northerly type associated with a mid-Atlantic high. Cold easterly and south-easterly winds set in at the end of the first week (I can't argue with the other ones cited above though).

Indeed, it could well be one of those occasions where we sleepwalk into a pretty cold month. Much like the way April 2009 went under the radar as a warm month.

Hadley is on 3.4C to the 3rd, with yesterday coming in at 1.9C.

Hmm, my 8.2c already looking in jeopardy, still time for warmth though.

3.2c to the 5th, -1.3c

Cold start to March, fair chance it could turn out colder than Feb.

Next few days looks preety chilly with suppressed maxima and minima - so a cold start to the month which will make it difficult to record an appreciably above average one.

Suspect we will easily be below 5 degrees at the half way stage.

The longer it remains cold the more difficult it becomes to record anything around average or above. However recent years have had some big switcharounds in the second half of March, giving average or above final CETs from much lower points mid-month. A couple of recent examples:

1st - 15th March 2005: 3.9C - final CET 7.2C.

1st - 15th March 2010: 3.6C - final CET 6.1C.

And not forgetting the huge nudge upwards in the final week of March 2006:

1st - 23rd March 2006: 2.8C - final CET 4.9C.
