On average here:

20C: Early May

25C: Mid-June

30C: not reached here June 2005, so probably wont happen.

Somewhere Nationwide:

20C: Mid-April

25C: Late-May

30C: Mid-June

Ive very suprised to see people predicting 20C in mid-March and 25C in mid/late April. Those temperatures would be exceptional.

20C in Mid March is very early yes, I think more realistically it's likely to be from the last week of March to mid April, that's usually when it normally occurs. I chose 25C in late April mainly from my heart than from my brain, it's unlikely and yes it would be fairly rare, but here's to hoping

20C- 26th April

25C- 13th May

30C- 28th May

I am envisaging a fairly cold second half of March and fairly cold April but warm May, so there is some clustering there.

At a local level, Norwich:

20C- 6th May

25C- 13th May

30C- 14th July

Cleadon (Tyne and Wear):

20C- 27th May

25C- 15th June

30C- not since 3 August 1990, and I don't expect it to happen this year either!

We got awfully close to 30°C at one point in 2006, though Cleadon would have been a bit cooler than Newcastle. 33°C in 1990 in the North East - truly exceptional.

For the UK

20°C - 21st March

25°C - 17th May

30°C - 13th July

For Newcastle

20°C - 18th May

25°C - 12th July

30°C - Doubt it

Anyone for 40c? I suppose end of July would be best time for this possible setup.

I'd guess early August would with all the warmth in from the continent, maybe earlier, maybe later.

36C in Surrey, or Kent for me is possible this summer. I'll go for 35.2C in Herstmonceux, some time in early-mid August.

I would like to see a repeat of August 2003 or even June/July 1976 and all in between but just don’t see it due the changes in the Artic

40C is highly unlikely, it would require the UK temperature record to be thrashed by 1.5C or more (1.9C if you agree with Philip Eden's suspicions over the Faversham, Kent reading). Considering that the 3rd August 1990 only saw 37.1C, which is the highest reading of the twentieth century, it looks like an extremely tall order. I doubt many of us would find 40C particularly enjoyable either- I certainly didn't in northern France, though it was good to be able to say that I'd experienced it.

I'd love to try 40c just to experience it! But I'd also like to try -40c too...

Both near enough impossible in the UK but there you go.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall. It doesn't rain very often here like other desert areas, but like the deadly floods in Libya last year showed, these rain events are likely becoming more extreme due to global warming.
