The warmest day for 1862 recorded at Greenwich was amazingly the 6th of May with a maximum of 27.5C

1862 wasn't actually that cold of a year, 2010 was colder by 0.34C for the annual CET

2010: 8.83C

1862: 9.17C

Why 1862 had such a low "highest maximum of the year" and it was so early in the year was because of the very cool summer which had a CET of 13.8C and is one of the coolest summers on record.

Only 2 years have failed to record a single daily CET mean of at least 18.0C or above, 1862 is one and the other is 1860.

Here May 2010 had the highest annual maximum too.

It was 26.3C on the 22nd, but the month was actually a degree or so below average due to four quite severe air frosts between the 10th and 14th (min -4.4C)

June max was 24.9, July 24.7 and August 22.9C
