I found the bit about electric currents particularly interesting:-

The vertical movement of waters is a slow process, though. Why do those whirlpools exist for such a long time? This is partially the effect of Earth’s magnetic field. In addition, marine water contains many charged ions, Na and Cl for example. To crown it all, water molecules are dipoles that are charged both positively and negatively. Any dipole starts spinning when moving in the magnetic field. An oceanic ring gathers millions of billions of molecules together. That is why the giant circle movement triggered by the vertical movement of water may last for months and years mechanically. Ions also give more power to the craters. Natrium and Chlorum are charged as well, and their movement in the magnetic field of the Earth also leads to the appearance of the circle movement.

I think the image they used is a little misleading since the features are 100s of kms in diameter.

It's more of a strong localised circulation which has probably been initiated by chance combinations of wind and current.

Once a large mass of water is moving it has a lot of momentum and just continues for a long time - only slowing very gradually - unless something pushes it the other way.

I don't think it is real. The site name says it all.

Also, there is nothing on the official news sites.

The official news sites mainly report war, and the royal wedding lol

Not much mention of the record 241 tornadoes and 45 deaths in the US either.

2nd earthquake of 5.2 in australia in 48 hours last earthquake there was 1965.

And cold antartic air heading torwards NZ with snow showers.

    All unusual IMO.

The giant whirpools are on quite a number of sites Backtrack.

These large rings are nothing new and not really note worthy IMo.

    http://www.aoml.noaa.gov/phod/nbc/

Shows how they are formed etc.

Below are the current time current analysis which shows the loops.

These kinds of loops occur in many if not most of the strong global currents such as the Gulf stream.

I quite agree Iceberg. I was just about to post something but you have saved me the bother. By coincidence I'm currently reading a new book, The Dance of Air and Sea: how oceans, weather, & life link together, by Arnold H. Taylor, that touches on the subject in some detail.
