The Easter of 1949 (15th-18th April) was the hottest on record. On Saturday 18th April 1949, the highest temperature was 29.4C in London.

I can't see us beating that, but a 26 DgC may be possible tomorrow - 22 DgC already showing close to my current location at Charlwood.

I think in the last 20 years, 2003 was the nearest to the current tend with an Easter that saw 25 DgC in Exeter on the 18th April - the sunniest of that period being 14 hours worth at Torquay on the same day.

April 2003. Warm (9.6C CET), sunny, and dry. The first three weeks were very settled and dry; the final week was wet and unsettled. The minimum at Hawarden (Flintshire) on the 10th was -7.5C. There was a memorable early heatwave. The warm weather began on Monday 14th. The temperature reached 27.4C (81.3F) at Stratfield Mortimer (Beds., near Reading) on the 16th - the third highest April temperature for the country ever recorded, and the highest since 1949. There were more very high temperatures to the west and north of the country on the 17th: 26.9C at Lochcarron (Wester Ross) - a new April record for Scotland, 27C at Prestatyn (the highest Welsh record since 1893), and even 22.1C at Orkney. Unfortunately it was much cooler on the east coast. The southerly airflow was accompanied by a substantial and widespread Saharan dustfall originating from the west Algerian desert from the 13th to the 21st. The daily range at Altnaharra on Good Friday, the 18 April was an enormous 28.2C (from 24.5C maximum to -3.7C minimum the next night). The whole of the British Isles was cloudless on Good Friday. The hot weather was suddenly replaced by much colder easterlies over Easter (18-21st), starting on the Saturday, with some marked temperature decreases. The drought ended in the third week: some places on the east coast, near Loftus, Redcar, and Whitby, had had no measurable rain for 42 days, from 13 March to 23 April. There were some heavy showers at the end of the month. On the 30th, south of Manchester, 25 mm of hail fell in 3 minutes, containing some 12 mm hailstones. Average sunshine was 182 hours, but Torquay saw 254. Overall the month was the warmest since 1987 (and before that 1961; it was the eighth warmest on record), the sunniest since 1990, and the driest since 1997.
April 1949. A very warm Easter; it was 23C over a wide area on Good Friday the 15th, and then 29.4C in London (Camden Square; also 28.9C at Greenwich, Kensington and Wealdstone) on the 16th (Easter Saturday), the record maximum temperature for April, brought on southerly winds. In the heatwave, many other parts of London also reached nearly 29C. Bude in Cornwall and Kelso in the Borders even reached 24C. This is the highest maximum for April on record. It is also the earliest date this century when 80+F was reached. Given the highest April maximum occurred only midmonth, it must be possible to exceed this. Although a cold front moved east on Easter Sunday (17th), a some places still exceeded 23C (Whitstable seeing 27.8C), so the temperature exceeded 21C on all four days of Easter in some locations. The 22nd was very wet in Scotland, Loch Sloy receiving 104 mm of rain. The month was very wet in the west, but dry and very sunny in the east.

Thanks for the summary of April 2003 an often forgotton very warm month, I do remember it being warm at times but not quite as warm as it was. Also this year has borne a very uncanny resemblence to 2003 I feel, with a dry March followed by a dry April after two fairly uninspiring months for winter cold and snow, though Jan 03 did produce some goods both at the beginning and end. Will the rest of this year follow the 2003 pattern which saw a very wet thundery May followed by three very good summer months and the exceptional heat of early August...

Stats maybe exciting but the actual weather is actually getting very boring now, even HP lover me is getting bored of it now and the highest warmth here is around 20C/21C yesterday in the midlands so nothing that extreme and you get really used to it after a while.

The 25C+ warmth is only a southeast thing in UHI's massive urban sprawls, the vast majority of the country isnt experiencing temps anywhere that high.

A BBC Weather Centre spokeswoman said: "The average temperature in London is usually 14 degrees at this time of year but today we are forecasting 26 degrees. "But it's not just London. The whole of England, Wales and Northern Ireland can expect sunshine over the next few days." She said Scotland could expect sunny intervals but more cloudy weather. She said the good weather was expected to last over the whole weekend but they were not forecasting beyond Monday

Especially here on the northeast coast temp has been no higher than 9.6°C today with haar lapping on and off the shore-line. Wish that high would 'bugga-off' and be replaced by a westerly, temps in the mid teens would feel like a heatwave here..!!!!!

for those craving accurate coverage try this link, it opens on the Max temps so far for today,

The other thing to remember its April NOT mid summer, afternoon temperatures form many inland areas f England and Wales are about 10C higher than average.

http://www.weatheron...kuk&SORT=3&UD=0

for previous days simply key in the date

some folk do have a touch of bias but I am sure most of you have cottoned on to that!

Nonsense. Deepest darkest Cumbria has reached 24º this afternoon. You're right that not everywhere is enjoying the warmth, but you're evidently wrong to suggest it's the urban south east which is alone in enjoying high temperatures.

We've managed the dizzy hights of 13.4C here in Scarborough with the intermittent fret blowing in. Feels lovely mind when the sun breaks through. Temp was 21C this morning when i left uni in York! Any of you pro's know if the fret is going to continue all weekend? It's hard to tell when the graphics don't pick up on it. The computerised forecasts don't seem to pick up on the fret either with NW forecasting 21C and 0% cloud coverage!

This equals the EXCEPTIONAL heat of April 2007 here.

Hey guys.

The pure purpose of this topic is to see the temperatures recorded throughout this exceptionally hot spell of April, one we many not see again for another 10 years perhaps?

So what was the highlights of the spell for you? what were your temperatures? Was it nice?

Let us know :p

Mine:

Around 8 days of 20C +

Hardly any rain apart from yesterday which delivered 13.5mm of rain from 90 minutes of thunderstorms

The best thunderstorm I've seen

Cannot recall a fully cloudy day!

Maximum temperature was 25C

Minimum was only around 7C

NO ground or air frosts.

The best ever spring tan.

23C max- not as warm as April 2003 managed, and certainly not as consistently dry, warm and sunny as April 2007 (the higher mean temp round here this month owing to the lack of cool nights).

Certainly a good April, but no more. Would have rated it higher if we'd caught a serious storm instead of spots of rain and a few distant rumbles/flashes. I can certainly remember a few fully cloudy days- 11th-12th-13th; and several more where it was cloudy for several hours (usually from noon to 6pm).

And of course it's had "Southeast versus the rest" disease, though admittedly not as severely as say July 2010, August 2009, late May 2005, August 2003, summer 2002....

Been fantastic, last 7 days especially. Temperature soared above 24C yesterday which is exceptional for Blackpool even in late-May and June nevermind April! May be a record too, I'm unsure. I've never had such a great tan so early in the year!

Stations right on the east coast such as Bridlington recorded 22c on the 6th - quite exceptional. Today reached 23.5c here and it was the warmest, most summery feeling April day i can ever recall.
