    April 2011, Lampeter, west Wales

Exceptionally warm and sunny. Very dry

As with the CET zone, west Wales has almost certainly had its warmest April on record, with, incredibly, mean maxima at early June levels! The month was characterized by dry, sunny and warm to very warm conditions and a deficit of cold, wet weather. Seven days exceeded 21c, itself quite an achievement as early as April, while just one day failed to reach the average. Few frosts and just the single air frost. Most of the rainfall total of 29mm fell in the first 5 days, with only 5mm thereafter. I would guess that it was also the sunniest ever April.

1st- 5th: Near normal temperatures with rain and showers at times. Quite a spectacular, though brief thunderstorm in the early hours of the 2nd.

6th-10th: Warm to very warm and mostly sunny.

11th-13th : A little rain at times, much cooler, only reaching 9c on the 13th.

14th- 22nd : Dry, soon became warm to very warm again. Sunny periods, although a few cloudier days too. Temperatures peaked at around 24c on both 21st and 22nd (Good Friday), and were just short of the remarkable values of April 2007. Light showers on the evening of the 22nd.

23rd- 30th : Mostly warm and dry with sunny periods, although much cooler than Good Friday. First air frost on 28th, this only slight. A very warm but quite windy final day - fittingly for this truly exceptional month.

    Note to graphs:

Due to over-sheltering in certain conditions, some of the maxima have been adjusted down by 1c, this is not apparent in the graphs.

    Bloody hell!

Warmest ever April for us coming in at 12c. That smashed the 2007 record by 0.8c.

Just noticed that's a record April here too, and the first to have a mean in double figures. In 2001, my mean was only 6.1C (compared to 10.2C this year!)

Have just compiled my stats, and it looks like I've just beaten OP's mean maximum for the month. Here goes...

    Central Reading in April 2011:

    Average maximum: 19.4

    Average minimum: 8.4

    Average for month: 13.9

    Highest maximum: 27.7 (April 23)

    Lowest maximum: 13.1 (5)

    Highest minimum: 11.8 (2)

    Lowest minimum: 4.6 (4)

    Air frosts: 0

    Ice days: 0

Thunder recorded on one day; no snow recorded.

Rainfall: no data available for this site; Reading University shows less than 3mm for the month, which is exceptionally dry.

An exceptionally warm and dry month, with average temperatures not far off those we would expect in June. Unusually warm and sunny spells between the 6th and 11th and the 17th and 25th, with dry cloudier spells and nearer average temperatures in between. The maximum of 27.7 on the 23rd is the highest temperature recorded in April at this location since I moved here in 2002.

It's going to take a while to get over such a draw-dropping-ly exceptional month.

Compare this to August 2010 (coolest in my records) that averaged 20.6c for mean maxima (which in itself was only 1.2c below normal) it gives you a good idea of how remarkable April was.

Some unbelievable records have been set for last month!

If December was one of the most exceptional months we will ever live through then surely April will join it at the top table!

I think one of the most amazing things that is currently occurring and was present during the latter part of April is the low humidity recordings, I got down to 22% this afternoon!!

Average certainly seems to have disappeared for the time being.

The warmest April on record here by a wide margin. The 23rd was also the warmest April day on record and the 24th had the highest April min' on record.

It was also the driest April on record by a margin of 0.7 mm over 1984. 2 rain days ( 0.2 mm or more ) was the fewest in any month since I began recording in 1963.

Sunshine was well above average but it was not quite as sunny as April 2007.

April 2011 also joined a list of 6 months as the least foggy on record; there was just 1 day with fog recorded.

The others were June 1978, May 1982, March 1995, Feb' 1998, July 2001 and June 2006.

A very warm and sunny month April compared to normal. The driest I've recorded since I started October 07 and also the most above average temperature anomaly wise. Sunshine is not available for this site but a nearby site suggests just under 250 hours for the month. The usual sea breezes occurred at times but this didn't have too much impact or stop plenty of warm days. There was a run of 7 days with a max >20C. The month is also notable for not having any air frosts recorded.

Stats according to my Davis VP2 below.

Note most data recorded by the station midnight-midnight except 'highest/lowest overnight min' which is adjusted.

    Highest max: 23.8°C (20th)

    Lowest max: 10.5°C (13th)

Highest overnight min: 10.8°C (night of 29th to 30th)

Lowest overnight min: 0.2°C (night of 3rd to 4th)

    Highest daily mean:14.6°C (30th April)

Lowest daily mean: 7.2°C, (13th April)

Mean max: 17.4°C - about 5C above average!

    Mean min: 4.9°C,

Mean: 11.4°C, about 3.1C above average

    Wettest day: 3.8mm (13th)

Monthly total: 9.2mm - way below average (about 55mm) including some days where 0.2mm dew or frost melt was recorded

Days of rain over 2.0mm: 2

    Days of falling sleet/snow: 0

Days of thunder heard: 3 - 23rd April: rumbles from thunderstorm several miles to the north, 29th April: very distant flashes + rumbles from storms well out in the channel (maybe not worth counting), 30th April: Thunderstorm just to north, followed by 3 more showers with a few rumbles to the north.

    Average wind speed: 4.3mph

    Max gust: 35mph (2nd)

Graph of temperature, dew point, and rainfall from the 1st April to the 1st May.

Finally got my April 2011 statistics in for Cleadon.

    Mean max 15.4C (+4.4)

    Mean min 7.1C (+2.9)

    Mean temp 11.2C (+3.6)

    Highest max 20.7C (23rd)

    Lowest max 11.7C (13th)

    Highest min 12.0C (6th)

    Lowest min 2.6C (28th)

    Total precipitation: 4mm

    Highest total: 2mm (1st)

    Days of >= 1mm precipitation: 3

Days with fog at 9am: 2

No frosts, snow or thunder. 1 day of hail (3rd)

April 2011 was an exceptionally warm, dry, sunny, record-breaking month at Cleadon. The first week was warm and dry but mostly cloudy, but the 6th and 7th were sunny and the 6th reached 20.4C, and the 8th was even warmer with 20.5C and sunny all day to go with it. After a few sunny days, cloud became variable around the 13th, but the 15th-20th inclusive were very sunny again. The last third of the month was dominated by winds off the North Sea, which brought sea fog and maxima of 12C on the 21st and 22nd, but the 23rd and 24th were notably warm as winds temporarily turned westerly. There were some heavy, albeit very brief, showers late on the 23rd (hence just 1mm in the rain gauge that day) but no thunder. Despite the onshore winds from the 25th-30th most days were sunny all day.

Overall the month just managed to beat April 2007 for warmth, being 0.2C warmer, but due to the onshore winds in the last third, it was a much closer-run thing than further inland, e.g. Durham's average maximum for the month is down as a remarkable 16.5C whereas in April 2007, Durham's mean max was only 0.1C above Cleadon's. It was the driest calendar month since I began recording in 1993, and probably the sunniest of the 1993-2007 period, considering the large number of clear sunny days.
