Total Lunar Eclipse At Moonrise: 15Th June

On the 15th of June, there will be a total lunar eclipse at moonrise for most of the UK. The totality phase starts about 8.22pm (BST) and ends at 10.03pm.

The further south you are, the longer the total phase you will see. Unfortunately, those in the very far north will miss out on the total phase but all parts should at least see the receding partial phase.

For the Channel Islands, moonrise is about 9.10pm (BST) and the Shetlands its about 10.23pm (BST)

For those on the south coast, it could be spectacular but it depends on how clear the SE horizon is and the clarity of the air.

Last lunar eclipse I saw was the March 2007 one.

Too much cloud here.

Sadly, the next total lunar eclipse visible in its entirety from the UK won't be until September 2015.

Next June, at sunrise we will catch the final stages of the Transit of Venus. We were very lucky in June 2004, the last time it happened. I hope for clear skies for that event next June.

Yet again the cloud spoils a celestial event :wallbash:

How typical of the weather to screw things up yet again.

Here though it's not as annoying as the lunar eclipse cock-up which occurred in the early hours of 21st December 2010 - even the bitter cold weather associated with clear skies didn't deliver, thanks to a festering dead front which came up from the south the previous evening and brought cloud with it. Some more snow would have been a consolation, but it used up all its energy in the SW and Midlands before getting here. I was not impressed!

I could not see anything of totality, about 20 minutes ago I could see what looked like a dimmer switch through frosted glass at a distance of 400 yards. That looked like a quarter of it was obscured. Maybe it was the eclipse, perhaps it was just a thicker cloud covering that portion.

Here's my record with eclipses:

August 1989 (Lunar, T)- saw all of it

May 1994 (Solar, P) 100% cloudy

October 1996 (Solar, P)- 100% cloudy

August 1999 (Solar, T, in south Devon) 110% cloudy

January 2000 (Lunar, T) saw most of the total phase

May 2003 (Solar, P) The only solar eclipse I've ever seen.

October 2005 (Solar, P) 100% cloudy

March 2007 (Lunar, T) spectacular. Saw all of it.

February 2008 (Lunar, T) 100% cloudy

New Years Eve 2009 (Lunar, umbral but not total) Yes.

February 2008 (Lunar, T) 100% cloudy

Kick in the the teeth that one. Remember the glorious clear sunny days, the spectacular afterglow, it was the sunniest February on record, wide diurnal temperature range. Come the night of the eclipse, it was cloudy!!
