Not 100% sure but perhaps Walnut Orb-weaver?

    Nuctenea umbratica

    8)

    Thanks, UKStorms :)

I've just been looking at some pictures on the internet of the Walnut Orb weaver and they appear to be very similar to the spider that's in my picture.

Do you know if they are harmless? In other words, should I be concerned that I have these creatures in the caravan?

They can bite, although there is no poison involved. If you do get bitten, which is unlikely really, then it would be a sharp pain followed by a short spell of numbness in some cases. Problem is bites can affect people differently, no matter what the creature!

If you feel you can remove it safely, then go ahead, but I doubt it'll cause you any trouble, and you certainly shouldn't worry too much :)

Thanks for putting my mind at rest :D The reason I asked was because we found two of them, which we removed and put in a container, and I was worried that there might be more of them hiding somewhere. Now I know what they are, I'll set them free in the garden rather than kill them, which I don't like to do.

"This spider is capable of biting humans, causing itchiness and a burning sensation followed by a red patch with white lumps."

Must of been quite a fright, you don't seem them often. Never seen one myself. Lucikly - as has been said - no venom involved!
