Back from Spain where the lowest temp was 21c to a current max on a summer afternoon of 12.8c after being used to 33c - 35c!

Hardly a cloud seen for 10 days and now a day of thorough dullness and heavy rain at times!

A dry and cloudy morning and early afternoon with a thick veil of Ast. The cloud began to move away to the south east by mid-afternoon allowing a few sunny intervals but cloud has thickened from the south west in the last hour and a half.

Interestingly the lowest cloud is moving from the north/north west whereas all the cloud above it is moving from the south west.

A second day in a row which was much better than forecast, it seems we were in the best spot, in between the heavy rain to the South East and far enough east to avoid the cloud to the west, so a dry morning with variable cloud, mostly sunny during the afternoon, mixed cloud again the evening. max temps 17C, but feeling warm in the sun.

OK , just scrolled the thread and no posts from Dorset, so here you are:

8.00 torrential rain between Dorchester and Poole, but dry in Poole. Late morning to mid day 3 hours heavy rain with torrential bursts accompanied by some thunder and lightning in Bournemouth and Poole.

Afternoon overcast and drizzle / showers. Still overcast now.

Reflecting what Old Met Man commented on earlier, I too struggle to understand why Met Office did not catch onto this earlier, at 7.00 they were giving 20% chance of heavy rain, when their own radar was sending a very different picture. In effect, not even a good 'nowcast'

I would welcome some commentary (with hindsight) as to what changed and caught the forecasters out.

Avoided worst of rain here and had steady light rain most of the day instead. Grey sky with little variance until sun appeared during setting. 12C all day rising to 13C by evening.

Ghastly. shok.gif

Currently away from home, in Gateshead, NW Radar saying rain coming, after avoiding any rain today, it finally began here at 2100.

Currently light rain with some stronger, heavier bursts, a little bit of heavy stuff to come. About 5-10mm/hour, heavier bursts at about 15-20mm/hour.

Heavy rain from around 1100 to 1500; lighter rain most of the rest of the day but even then with some heavy bursts. Exceptionally cold too, and probably the wettest day we've had since July 2007. Maximum 14.9 (around midnight), minimum 11.4 (lunchtime). Wind moderate NE.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
