Completely overcast with further cloud advancing from the South West.

Here's a question not quite worthy of its own thread.

For those without a weather station recording sunshine. http://www.guardian.co.uk/news/2011/apr/21/weatherwatch-sunshine-solar-radiation-clouds

What is the tipping point between being sunny and not, so would I be right in thinking that if the sun is visible through the clouds, then this would register as being sunny. Alternatively if it is bright, but you cannot see he sun, then this wouldn't count.

Obviously such confusion doesn't arise, when there is bright sunshine or if it is completely overcast.

It's an interesting question Jackone. Electronic sunshine recorders are pre-set to register bright sunshine at the number of lumens determined by the W.M.O to constiture 'bright sunshine'. In practice this means that weak sunshine through a veil of altostratus will not register, even if the disc of the sun is visible behind the cloud. A sheet of broken altocumulus with intermittent bright sunshine mixed with longer spells of hazy sunshine will trigger the recorder intermittently.

A disadvantage of the Campbell Stokes recorder was that the burn mark tended to spread slightly beyond the point at which the sun stopped shining. This was not much of a problem during continuous sunshine or long sunny periods as an allowance could be made for it, but on days with sunshine broken by short cloudy interludes the burn marks tended to merge, making it difficult for the observer to accurately measure the actual sunshine duration.

A much warmer start with a min of 16c and currently 21.5c - much more summer feeling today gladly.

A fairly sunny morning with some clouds around.

On the sunshine question - bright with 'light bulb' sun isn't sunny in my book.

To count as sunny I'd say:

- You should be able to see shadows on the ground with a contrast between areas in sun and areas in shade

- Be unable to look at the sun directly

- Feel the warmth coming from the sun (perhaps excluding sunrise/sunset)

I think point 1 is the clearest cut although times around sunrise and sunset will make it harder to determine.

Vast improvement from about 2.30 p.m. Quite a bit of stratus about but there has been more than two hours of sun, which combined with warmer air behind front has meant we're now up at about 21/22C.

After a promising bright start, the thick cloud and frequent showers rolled in. Hammering it down as I speak, and very gloomy.

Looks like yet another disappointing August in the bag.

A dry and warm feeling day with some decent spells of sunshine.

A 'good' day for this year as we've seen the sun. Afternoon was cloudy as per usual but still at least we got some sun.

24.1c max so we did quite well. 19c at 2140 so again doing ok.
