No general stats for me but a couple of observations for August.

First half of month rainfall: 158mms

    Second half; 10 mms.

This August is the first Summer month in which I have failed to register a temp of over 20c since I began my records and that was some time ago!

Stats for Cleadon, Tyne and Wear, August 2011, relative to estimated 1971-2000 averages:

    Mean max 18.5C (-0.6)

    Mean min 11.9C (+0.2)

    Mean temp 15.2C (-0.2)

    Highest max 22.7C (5th)

    Lowest max 14.7C (31st)

    Highest min 16.0C (1st)

    Lowest min 9.2C (29th)

    Total precipitation: 89mm

    Highest daily total: 32mm (6th)

    Days >= 1mm: 15

    Days of thunder: 2

    No fog, sleet/snow or hail.

The first week was warm and changeable and there was some thunder at 2-3pm on the 2nd, and the 6th was a remarkably wet day with some thunder (mainly to the west). I don't have much to say about the remainder of the month- not quite as dreich as August 2008 but very non-descript and generally cloudy. It was the second coolest August since 1999 and the wettest since 2008, and it was warmer than last year's only because of a higher average minimum.

Summer 2011 overall came out exactly average in terms of temperature and rainfall. It had more thunder than usual due to the period 25 June-11 July which gave a total of 6 thunder-days. This made it about as cool as summers 1998 and 2000 but less cool than summer 1993.

    Summer comment with temperatures

Bit above average over the 3 months for Mean, Min and Max

Rainfall not used as comparison not possible with RAF Finningley data due very protected exposure.

Using the simple data of rain on any day then with 55 against the long term average of 38 its been fairly wet at times.

Thunder heard by me on 3 days with long term average=7(probably missed some due deafness!)

My statistics for central Reading in August 2011:

    Average maximum: 20.9

    Average minimum: 12.9

    Average for month: 16.9

    Highest maximum: 27.7 (August 3)

    Lowest maximum: 14.9 (18)

    Highest minimum: 17.2 (2)

    Lowest minimum: 8.2 (19)

Thunder recorded on one day - August 7.

Rainfall: no data available for this site; Reading University shows around 75mm for the month, which is above average.

Rather cool overall (particularly by day), dull and wet - definitely a poorer than average month and almost as bad as the dire Augusts of 2008 and 2010. The warmth of the first few days soon gave way to a cool and showery regime. Mid month was generally cool and dull, with the 18th being exceptionally cold and wet (30-50mm reported from stations around Reading; the daytime temperature here only reached 13 deg C). The last week was generally cloudy and cool, with two more wet days on the 25th and 26th.

    Rather dry, near average temperatures.

A nondescript Summer month, lacking any heat, thunderstorms, really wet weather, or really sunny weather, The only notable aspect being the frequency of very cool August nights,8 falling below 8c)

1st - 3rd: Quite warm with some sunshine, a few showers. The month's disappointing low highest maxima of just 23c was on the 3rd.

4th – 5th: Near average temperatures. Mostly dry, some limited sunshine.

6th - 16th: Unsettled and breezy with rain or showers at times. Temperatures mostly cool to average, although fairly warm 11th. A rather cloudy spell with some sunny spells.

17th - 23rd: Mostly dry with sunny spells and average to rather warm temperatures.

24th - 28th: Unsettled, quite cool and breezy with occasional showers. Possible thunder on the afternoon of the 26th, my wife thought she heard something, and the radar and webcam evidenced downpours passing close by.

29th – 30th: A cool and cloudy, but mostly dry couple of days.

31st: A very chilly night, minimum of 3.4c, close to a ground frost. Warmer with some sunshine by day.

Adjustments made of 1c to quite a few maxima, this not apparent in the graphs.

Slightly cooler, duller and wetter than normal, but pretty close to average. Despite this it was actually the coolest since 1999 and third-dullest of the last decade. The month started warm and quickly turned unsettled with 4 days in the first 8 containing thunderstorms. The 8th was a very wet day, with the highest rainfall total since December 2008. Another notable day was the 26th, where under almost constant rain all day the temperature climbed to just 14.6°C, making it the lowest maxima since 2001. Otherwise it was a pretty benign month, only 7 days surpassed 22°C and there was a remarkable absence of any proper sunny days. There was again an absence of hot days. The highest max on the 1st of 25.6°C was actually the joint warmest since 2006.
