Surprised this hasn't been started yet...

I'll kick off with mine.

It was a month characterised by high maximums and minimums, a very warm start and a mild finish.

In my area we didn't get the low minimums in the midst of the month that most places had, which had an impact on the finishing values.

My stats seem to correlate quite well with the Midlands average (+3.1C above average)

October

I can't be sure whether local record were broken, however the Bidston temperature series has the previous October mean record as 13.3C in 1995, and this has certainly been beaten by Liverpool (EGGP) and Hawarden.

Compared to the October 71-00 average (10.4C), October 2011 comes in at 3.35C above the average. It is unknown whether this has been surpassed locally, given that Bidston observatory ceased taking records in 2002.

A warm month but not as warm as 2005 or 2006 (13.8c and 13.9c respectively) The frequency of cold days and nights was considerably greater than 2005 or 2006 (about the same as 2009) but such was the warm start, the average was always too high for it to ever recover back to near normal

Average min = 9.75c (Lowest = 1.4c on 20 Oct)

Mean = 12.84c

Dry days = 12

From other peoples posts, it seems that to work out the overall mean for the month you simply add the mean max and min and divide by 2. Isn't this rather inaccurate? In December the night is far longer than the day so the average for the day will be closer to the min than the max.

Probably quite sad I've worked out how to weight max and min for each month but it makes a big difference and is far more accurate.

October was incredibly warm with a brief interlude mid month when max temps were slightly below average and there were some nights approaching freezing. Also quite dry, just 28mm.

Mean max 16.0

Mean min 9.4

Overall average 12.2

Highest max 28.7 (2nd)

Lowest max 11.0 (18th)

Highest min 15.7 (3rd)

Lowest min 0.7 (18th and 20th)

Corrigan, as long as everyone is has the bar at the same height it probably doesn't matter.

As I've always known for us amateur enthusiasts, it's a+b/2. It may not be accurately weighted, but it does seem to generally concur with recorded CETs

The warmest October since 2006. The weather in the first week was exceptional, with an average of 16.2°C. Both the 1st and 3rd exceeded 25°C, the first time two days in October have managed to do so. The 1st was very warm indeed, with a new record max of 27.3°C - beating 1985 by over a degree and higher than the September record set in 1999. 4 of the first 5 days set new date records. The high min on the 3rd of 15.7°C was the warmest since 1985, the last time such an unusual warm spell occured in October.

Unsuprisingly the month consisted of a very warm first half, but was somewhat countered by an average second half. After the warm and sunny first week it became rather unsettled for a time. South-westerly winds brought overcast conditions and persistent rain from the 8th-12th, with much of the month's rain falling during this period. It then turned cooler, drier and sunnier by mid-month. The 14th and 15th were clear and sunny throughout. The nights of the 18th and 19th were the coolest in the calm and clear conditions. A rather benign second half was then capped with two rather warm but dull final days.

Overall, an unexceptional month but with a very notable record-breaking spell at the start. Very similar in many respects to 1985.
