Anyone remember this? Looking at the weather records for the now defunct Leeds Weather Centre, the temperature reached 34.4c (95F), which is probably a (modern) record for Leeds.

The 1990 heat wave in the United Kingdom was a particularly severe heat event with temperatures hitting record highs of 37.1°C on 3 August. The temperature was recorded at Nailstone, Leicestershire, and was a full degree Celsius above the previous record, set in 1911. However, this record was subsequently broken in the 2003 heatwave.

I was a bit too young to remeber it but I've seen pictures of our garden that summer and despite my parent's best watering efforts it was all yellow!

I remember it very well. I was commuting to work by bike at the time, a 16 mile trip each way, starting very early in the morning and knocking off mid-afternoon. It was like cycling into an open oven with the temperature on low ground around 34.5c in the shade and what must have been well over 40c above the tarmac.

I recorded 31.8c here and that still stands as the highest temperature in almost 50 years of records.

My particular memory of that summer is that I was working on a milkround during the school holidays. During the first few days of August, the discussion was always whether 100oF would be broken that day. A very memorable heatwave event which seemed never ending; the sort of summer that invokes memories of perfect school holidays!

The heat was short and sweet. The entire summer was pretty good though, but the heat was short lived.
