What time of year were you planning to go? because it depends, in mid-summer, The eastern parts of France near Germany are great but storms are less prédictable/reiable but amazing when they do occur, if you want an almost assured dependable source of storms then the Massif-Central (Clermont-Ferrand down to Millau) often gets storms in summer or try the Pyrenees which get some amazing storms, near Benelux and Atlantic areas are great also for storms when Heatwaves break down, so

Spring: Atlantic coast (south of Bordeaux) or Montpellier/Nice coast in SE France (Late-Spring)

Summer: Almost anywhere but i reccomend massif-central or NE France especially Reims/Saint Quentin area

Fall: Atlantic coast (south of Nantes) or mountain areas near the med

Winter: SW France Or Marseille/Nice coast, maybe Alps/Pyrenees for Thundersnow! :)

I would go for Languedoc, because it is the area I know best and the Pyrenees and the Massif Centrale are not far away and they throw up some cracking storms - word of caution though, don't camp next to a small stream in a valley - they very quickly become raging torrents.

I went to uni with a big European Storm Chaser and he would always go to the North of the Pyrenees and then up through Massife-Central. It helped that he had a house in MC though!

Whenever I've looked at storm-trackers during the summer months one area that really sticks out as being a storm hotspot is the Côte Sauvage (Savage Coast, near Brittany). It also helps that the scenery looks pretty stunning too - I plan to go there myself at some point!

You probably need to interpret the ESWD reports for a set period and type of event, details can be found here:

http://essl.org/cgi-bin/eswd/eswd.cgi

This is not specifically thunderstorms but all manor of extreme weather events.

The days details of sferic activity can be found here:

Or back further into previous years (day specific) here:

Personally I would set aside a few weeks in summer. When the models look good, get yourself across the channel. Was planning to do this with a fellow chaser this year for a couple of days. I'd say NE.
