will keep any eye on, He may be having issues with it!

I would say that there may be some problem with the equipment, the readings seem awfully high and out of kilter with the other stations. See if you can look into it or make him aware. :)

Cold front making landfall here, winds are fierce. 65-70mph gusts.

WOW just had two flashes of lightening and loud thunder, torrential rain/hail and the wind veered S-SW-WSW swirling around all over the place with repeated gusts around 70mph!!

Roof tiles sound like dominos bouncing up and down! :help:

Twas rather windy here a short time ago as the rainband came across, yet again we escaped the heaviest but the highest gust here in Oxford was 35mph.

Just had a phone call from my mum in a bit of a panic, she thinks her roof has taken some damage, the house was shuddering with very loud bangs on the roof and she has had to move downstairs because she didn't feel safe.

A severe event with no warnings for Northern England....

Nowcast picking up something - http://www.nowcast.co.uk/lightning/ used this in the Summer Storms, seems accurate.

Damn Liam, the worst should be over shortly in Cumbria before the front continues to move eastwards. Luckily it doesn't look like its hanging about so should cross the country within the next few hours, out into the North Sea by morning.

Gusts up to (and over) 60mph being recorded all along the squall.

by around 3am GFS 18z showing the stormy conditions for the far North here, see the tightly packed isobars, they are the storm force winds, the areas around the low pressure in the far North is a potent swath of damaging winds. thats for this morning and through thursday(today) the winds to hit these areas could be 80mph+

look at the deep low in the far North on this chart below, still stormy at 9am,

I was quite shocked at just how bad that was, excited and a wee bit scared tbh!! the torrential rain and hail has stopped but it's still very gusty from a westerly direction now but not as severe as it was just before.

Unbelievable despite the front being only some 30-40 miles from here, outside its crystal clear night skies with Jupiter and a few stars visible with vision. Hard to think in 30 minutes time that squall will be knocking on the footsteps of the Pennines

Unfortunately so, got the camera out with exposure settings in place. With the topography around here what might be a benign cell can (and has in the past) prepped up..not holding my breath in expectation of anything 'exciting' though.

Passing through now as mainly light- moderate rain and a breeze

Edit: torrential now

A brief but potent affair with some light stuff on its front edge.

Nothing to write home about here, light rain, light winds. Still at least I got to test out some night photography settings while it passed over, so its not a complete write-off. Down the valley Buxton recording a peak gust of 45mph as it passed.

Quite quiet down here this morning with the stronger winds in N. Scotland that should ease later in the day until the new low arrives on saturday following roughly the the same track near the left exit of the jet stream.

The remnants of the cold front are now reaching the NW London suburbs. It seems to have weakened throughout the night, but at least it is delivering some much needed, albeit brief rainfall.

A possibility of a convective element to today's weather with Scotland in a level 1 area according to ESTOFEX:

post-6667-0-38124400-1322725017.png

Storm Forecast

Valid: Thu 01 Dec 2011 06:00 to Fri 02 Dec 2011 06:00 UTC

Issued: Wed 30 Nov 2011 11:20

Forecaster: GATZEN

SYNOPSIS

A ridge spreads from the Iberian Peninsula to the Aegean Sea. To the north, short-wave troughs move eastward across northern Europe. One trough will spread across north-eastern Europe early in the period. Weak low-level moisture is expected and deep moist convection is unlikely. To the west, two intense troughs are forecast ahead of a strong jet streak racing across the northern Atlantic. The eastern one will move north-eastwards crossing Scandinavia, while the western one ejects into the Iberian Peninsula and cuts off.

DISCUSSION

Northern North Sea region

Together with the mid-level short-wave trough, an intense surface low will move from the northern North Sea to central Norway until noon. At the southern flank of this low, a sting jet is expected by latest numerical models that will be associated with high winds. The contribution of deep moist convection to the occurrence of severe wind gusts is questionable given the lack of low-level moisture. However, some overlap of better low-level moisture near the low pressure centre and moderate lapse rates can be anticipated to the south of the low, where also some lift will be present due to a very strong mid-level jet streak that leads to differential cyclonic vorticity advection. Together with the fact that the water surface is relatively warm, some deep moist convection can be possible that will likely contribute to the downward mixing of high winds. Severe wind gusts of 40 m/s are forecast. Given the rather weak influence of the convection, a level 1 is issued.

Denmark, north-western Germany, Benelux, northern France, southern UK

As the mid-level trough starts to move south-eastward to the Iberian Peninsula, the intense trough axis will slow down over the British Isles during the period. Strong mid-level jet streaks are expected to spread north-eastwards ahead of the trough axis, leading to strong lift and vertical wind shear. Latest models indicate that this will be associated with frontal waves that travel across the area. Although plenty of low-level moisture will be advected northward ahead of the cold front, stable lapse rates will likely limit the potential of deep moist convection. Some storms may be possible at Thursday morning, but overall threat seems to be marginal.

Last Updated: 23:08 Wednesday, 30th November 2011

Valid: 00:00 Thursday, 1st December 2011 - 23:59 Thursday, 1st December 2011

Areas Affected:SLGT: N Isles, NW Scotland, S + W Ireland, SW Wales, SW England

Synopsis:Upper trough becomes a cut-off low over N Isles early in the period, followed by a significant upper trough moving slowly eastwards from the Atlantic later. Two 'bouts' of significant convection exist.

Discussion:Cold mid-levels (typically -35C at 500mb) atop relatively warm SSTs will steepen lapse rates during the first few hours of the forecast period as an upper trough migrates northeastwards over Northern Scotland and the Northern Isles, becoming a cut-off low. Underneath said trough, significant convection will develop with ELTs potentially as low as -40C, capable of producing lightning and small hail. An overlap of >30kts LLS and >40kts DLS may promote the chance of some organised convection and perhaps a tornado/waterspout. Convective gusts >60kts are possible locally.

As the upper trough/low moves gradually away towards the Norwegian Sea from daybreak onwards, attention then turn to the approaching sharp upper trough to the W of Ireland. During the midday and afternoon hours, as cold mid-levels overspread the area and steepen lapse rates, noteworthy convection will allow sharp showers with local thunder and lightning to develop, with ELTs down to -30C. It is worth noting, activity may be late starting. Such showers are then forecast to move eastwards across southern Ireland towards western Wales and SW England during the late afternoon and evening hours, and hence the reason for the SLGT risk here.

TORRO CONVECTIVE DISCUSSION 2011/020

A TORRO CONVECTIVE DISCUSSION has been issued at 14:45GMT on Wednesday November 30 2011

Valid from/until: 14:45GMT - 04:00GMT on Wednesday November 30/Thursday December 1 2011 for the following regions of the United Kingdom & Eire:

Eire N Ireland Scotland IoM N England N Wales THREATS

Isolated tornadoes; wind gusts to 60mph; occasional CG lightning

SYNOPSIS

Strong south-westerly upper flow covers the British Isles at the moment with a sharp trough to the west. This will continue to sharpen as it approaches through tonight. Strong warm advection is occurring across western parts of the British Isles at the moment. A short-wave trough is currently moving NE across NW Eire towards Scotland. An embedded narrow line of convection with occasional sferics is across western Eire at present, and is likely to continue to move north-east. With very strong low-level shear in place, strong wind gusts and isolated tornadoes are possible.

This evening and overnight, strong cold front will move quickly eastwards across the discussion area. Line convection may accompany this, and with continuing strong low-level shear, this too brings the risk of strong winds and isolated tornadoes.

Intense winds gusting to around 80mph or so are expected tomorrow morning across the N Isles, although these are primarily driven by synoptic-scale processes as a deep area of low pressure moves through.
