Feeling slightly tired after not getting to sleep until about 2am, what an action packed night!

Torrential rainfall

Hail stones

CG lightening & thunder

Severe gales with repeated gusts up to 65-70mph as the front moved through.

Nice way to start Winter 2011, more please! :w00t:

Sounds great!

That squall delivered less then 1mm here, so I'm glad I went to sleep rather then staying up.

Could someone with the knowledge that i havent got tell me if the low that was due to bring stormy weather on sunday night/monday still on or has that gone pear shaped now. Thanks in advance :drinks:

I believe that low pressure system for Sunday has been seriously downgraded!

Just checked the Met Office stations for Orkney and Shetland seems they got just over 70mph top gusts this morning, a little lower than what was predicted.

As for Saturday it looks like the winds have been upgraded slightly and pushed further South

And for the Sunday/Monday low it has downgraded completely however on the GFS 06z this morning a low of 984mb will sweep pass,

Bring gales or severe gales across the UK

The midday charts for the Atlantic and the UK. A trough to the SW will probably bring a little rain later down these parts. Quiet tomorrow until the new low zips south of Iceland over Saturday with some srong winds in the north. It's a bit nippy at Stornaway.

As Netweather have said on twitter, local flooding is a risk in the SE this eveing, lots of rain to come and the front seems quite strong at the moment. System should pivot as a weak low forms along the front.

Yes the METO were going for a similar scenario this morning regarding the low.

When you mean pivot does that mean spin back or stall on its self

Yeah but the MetO was predicting heavy rain and winds for my area last night and we got neither, so I shall take it with a pinch of salt.

I am not suprised at all that the storm for Sunday and Monday has been downgraded so ubrubtly since yesterday as there was no agreement from any of the other models.

This is a good example of how quickly the models can change when they are showing storms or strong winds. It is only normally when there is more agreement across the majourity of the models or if they continually show a deep low that can you then be more confident of it happening.

Also just past experiences of the models can teach you when to believe an output to a full extent or not.

Been raining constantly for the last hour and a half. Not hard, but certainly enough to make huge puddles.

The latest from the 18z GFS,

For Friday night and into Saturday morning its still looking the same for the North of the UK.

And the latest on the Sunday/Monday event still nothing worth noting of and within the current time frame now it will most likely stay that way.

However the GFS does show stormy weather for next Tuesday night and Wednesday morning for most of the UK.

It's been showing this for the past few runs although its track has changed about a bit. However none of the other models agree with this. Maybe something to keep a watch on.

Looking quite stormy at times next week but to far away to speculate on detail at this stage, the GFS shows gusts to 80knts (92mph) in the Irish Sea from that system Tues/Wed, but as I said to far away atm and the GFS has an obsession with progging deep depressions.

The current synoptic set up is ripe for producing severe wind storms however.

Wish mother nature would throw some thunderstorms in with these lows not just wind and rain.

Whats anyones thoughts on ThunderSnow over the next few days? quite abattle of airmasses at times, i would expect some thunder? not looked into that yet but i think it could happen, thundersnow is hard to predict but with convection/fronts and the changing airmasses/temperatures i would have thought a risk is there.

The next week or so GFS fires up some massive wind storms, im quite sure at some point the South is to see an event from these setups with deep lows potentially through the weekend and into next week affecting many areas and different areas at times, sometimes widespread. So alot of interest/excitement to come, depending on what weather you like! we have the risk of gales/severe gales, with the risk these could hit widespread areas at times, heavy rainfall and flooding, and snow risk! its all coming at once!

At least the GFS appears to be fairly consistant over the next few days regarding the jet stream.

The Isle of Man has also come in for a battering this week:

WINDS reaching severe gale force caused havoc across the island this week.

The Steam Packet has made a number of cancellations since Saturday due to the forecast gale and severe gale force winds, which led to rough conditions in the Irish Sea. On Wednesday, the 8.45am Ben-my-Chree return Douglas-Heysham sailing was brought forward to 7am due to forecast adverse weather later in the day. The 7.45pm return crossing was then cancelled. But as the Manx Independent went to press on Thursday it was expected there would be a catch-up operation in supermarkets to replenish their stocks. The 8.45am Douglas to Heysham sailing left on time and there were no warnings of expected disruption.

Department of Infrastructure crews have been working to clear fallen trees and branches from the island’s roads. Deputy civil engineering section manager Alan Hardinge said: ‘Department staff have been busy dealing with storm damage over the past few days.’ He said on Wednesday staff dealt with fallen trees at Tholt-y-Will, St Jude’s, White Hoe, Maughold and Begoade. On Thursday, between 12.15am and 6.30am crews dealt with fallen trees at Kerrowmoar and Tynwald Mills and fallen branches at Ballamodha and Ballig Bridge.

A combination of high winds and high tides has meant Douglas Council contractors responsible for keeping the seaweed under control on the beach have been kept busy. Councillor David Ashford said: ‘With the high winds a lot of seaweed has been washed over on to the promenades.’ But high tides have meant it has been difficult for the contractors to get on to the beach. He added: ‘When you have high winds like we’ve had over the last couple of days there’s not much you can do to prevent it. ‘All they can do is clear it as quickly as possible.’

Manx Electricity Authority engineers worked in difficult weather conditions on Tuesday after 1,977 Onchan homes were without power. It was caused by a 11kV cable fault between Douglas North Primary substation and Glenside substation Electricity supplies were interrupted at 7.08am, and restored about an hour later. MEA chairman Eddie Lowey MLC thanked customers for their patience and apologised for any inconvenience caused by this morning’s cable fault in Onchan. And he paid tribute to the prompt response by the MEA’s workforce in restoring supplies, in what were ‘very awkward conditions’.

According to the Met Office, based at Ronaldsway, the highest winds were recorded on Tuesday. That day forecasters issued a warning that there would be heavy rain at times and ‘some difficult driving conditions’. At the airport, the highest gust recorded was 75mph (65 knots). Meanwhile on the Mountain Road, there were gusts of up to 80mph (69 knots). Severe gale force winds also hit the island on Wednesday evening.

A Met Office spokesman said exposed areas would have seen gusts of 75mph. Strong winds are expected over the weekend but it will be less windy than the island has seen during the week.
