OK just been out on the bike. snow line for dry lying snow was at Waskerley, at around 400m, this also roughly formed the eastward extent of the showers as I could see it. Westward of this point snow was virtually persistent (if varying in intensity) with full cloud cover. Eastward was mainly sunny skies with partial cloud, and you could see to Newcastle.

I suspect there is a way to go before the major towns see anything (if at all) but the upland areas will probably get a good pasting.

Typically under this scenario I see showers 'breaking' over the hills around dusk to effect the more easterly locations, and I suspect this will happen this evening.

Oh, and the wind is evil!

if i get 1 cm tonight i will knit fog.(and also make you an honourable gentleman kold)

Where exactly are you by the way mate?

Anyway colder air is still digging down, 850hpa temps have a further 1-2C to drop yet for most, coldest air comes down for the region near Manchester at 3-5am so perfect timing really.

Temps from Liverpool upto Preston look marginal throughout though accumulating snow shouldn't be ruled out here either, just its going to be harder and less likely.

The colder air and lower dew points are still yet to move from roughly Cumbria/Durham southwards, even here the dew points are around 0-2c, in excess of 4c for many over southern parts of N England.

Height will probably make the difference between people seeing snow and settling and people seeing a wintry mix down at sea level.

Good to hear there is now some snow settling at Cat and Fiddle, expect they will get quite a good covering by tomorrow morning.

All the showers in the north of England are moving south now.. so radar watching rather then lamp post watching tonight I think!

Just had my first real heavy hail shower which gave a slight covering which sort of looked like snow for a while then it melted, just stuck with a load of old rain now.

Temp 3c.

A slight lull at the moment over the Nw of England with the showers, mainly of rain working down into the Midlands.

Interesting line working down through Cumbria, as temps drop away over the NW I suspect we will be seeing more and more snow reports over the next 2-3hrs.

Looks like the snowline is now down to 300M, suspect in the heavy showers its probably down to 150-200M now judging from the reports. Still got some way to go yet as we head into the eveing hours.

Dubai Floods: Another Warning Sign for Desert Regions?

The flooding in the Middle East desert city of Dubai earlier in the week followed record-breaking rainfall.
