Austria, Mild and dry in the South and East, but very wet in the west with 3 times the average December rainfall.

The drought conditions continued through much of the country. This follows one of the dryest Novembers since records began. The lowland and forest regions start the New Year barren of snow cover, however 156 inches of snow cover the higher slopes of the Arlberg in the extreme west. Average temperatures were generally between 2/3 degrees C above normal with the highest temperature recorded in Carinthia of 17.6C.

December was a mainly mild month coming in above average with a mild start although towards mid-month it became cooler, but still with no air frost recorded, although daytime temperatures were around average during that time. Towards mid month a more genuine cold spell came which allowed for the first snowfall of the season but that snowfall pretty much melted the same day as it landed with slush becoming an issue. A few days after and mild weather was back with it becoming very mild around the Christmas period, with 15.1C recorded on Boxing day, along with some unseasonably mild nights. For the rest of the month it was a case of average or slightly above by day and night.

The mildest December since 2006 and 6°C warmer than the year before. It was the 3rd sunniest and 3rd driest December of the last 10 years. It was also the first completely snowless December since 2007. The first air frost of the season on the 17th was the joint 4th latest date in 31 years.

The month was dominated by mild, windy conditions from the west. However the month could be separated into two halves. The first half of the month was exceptionally sunny: by the 15th the 1971-2000 average of 47 hours of sunshine had already been surpassed. Temperatures were also close to average after a mild first week and conditions turned temporarily calmer during mid-month. The final 10 days then saw exceptionally mild weather. Christmas day was a date record maxima in 31 years of records and the max temp of 13.5°C on Boxing Day was the warmest max in December since 2001. The strong winds returned in the final week, though rainfall amounts remained low due to the shelter of the Pennines.
