Some sferic maps also show the location of CB clouds, in the daytime i presume that the CB clouds are observed by meteorologists at airfields etc, but at night how is a CB identified ?,as they are also shown on sferics maps during darkness.

Although it is possible to get lightning without Cbs it's extremely rare so if sferics show lightning it's a reasonable assumption that Cbs are present. There are fewer and fewer meteorological observers these days which makes the amateur network much more important. That's just my opinion.

There are a few cb symbols in the midlands on meteocentre now, there has not been any thunder around for at least two hours, so i still can't see how a cb is recognised in total darkness lol.

I don't know why the LoL unless you are taking the left trouser leg but have you ever experienced total darkness at an official reporting station.

i guess it wouldnt be total darkness at an official reporting station, but i doubt it would be light enough to make out which clouds had become a cumulonimbus, maybe its cloud top temperature they measure with radar..
