Bit nippy for the most part, freezing fog with a much stronger frost than yesterdays -4c.. Generally as temperatures have been well below freezing all night.

True inversion as Durham (80m) is at -3c, I (50m) am at -5c, Chester-le-street (20m) is at -6c while on the banks of the river wear it is -7c.

Eery with everything covered in white and thick fog, generally appearing like light snow is falling- if only! This is the next best thing though, coldest day since 31st January (349 days ago!)

Freezing fog patches drifted around the vicinity of Cleadon overnight, eventually settling over Cleadon itself, with a thick white frost on the ground (which resembles a dusting of snow, like Isolated Frost indicated). The minimum was -3.3C, so not quite as cold as the previous night, but it's worth noting that some of the milder Januarys don't get this cold all month- it shows what a clear "inversion high" can do at this time of year.

The fog is currently thinning out into mist with some sunshine coming through and well-scattered patches of altocumulus.

Subsidence under the high pressure has dried out the air at higher altitudes - an area of very dry air moved over the Scottish highlands this morning with dewpoints down to -16.7c at Cairngorm and -17.2c at Aonach Mor - this coincided with the air warming at the same time being above freezing.

It got to 2.1C here at Cleadon with some broken stratocumulus and altocumulus patches, which were extensive out in the North Sea but largely fizzled out during the afternoon. Some sunny intervals and quite hazy. No sign of any freezing fog patches forming yet, currently at -0.8C, having been as low as -2.2C at 6:30pm.
