1.0C, frequent light snow showers throughout the day.

Not expecting anything below -2C tonight, too cloudy & not forecast to clear. :(

Other than that, may well have to wait a few more weeks for a return to cold conditions if this arctic blast misses & goes into the N.Sea.

Heavy? I some how doubt that, there was bugger all on the radar!

Anyway, WINTER STRIKES BACK?! Post from Johnholmes in the model thread:

Putting specifics on which is what the NOAA forecaster is trying to do out to day 7 may be where some folk are confusing the charts as being a 'mess' as someone described them.

Look further out as ba suggests for the general weather pattern.

The 500mb charts, have not been rock solid in inter model agreement and also from day to day but what they have NOT suggested is any marked change, in spite of UK Met at times suggesting otherwise, of a pattern that is not going to turn mild out into the 3rd week of February if not starting the 4th-as far as I go with any predictions.

All 3 consistently show the 500mb flow to north of west with the upper ridge 'somewhere' in mid Atlantic is the majority decision for its position, and a trough to the east of the UK, actual position and orientation not too clear.

That implies to me-cold not mild and blocked not mobile over the Atlantic.

Settle down, take some deep breaths, stop jumping up and down after every run from the models and look for any dsicernible trends in the synoptic outputs NOT specifics. After yesterday I would have thought most sensible folk would realise that forecasting for the UK in winter is a pretty hard task

Lovely charts posted by Gavin in the model thread showing max temps of 12 degrees for the NW in the near future. Good news as spring is getting nearer and get some good mild weather we all want and a nice early spring is very much possible if charts verify.

Good news all round :)

Remember it well Backtrack!

I'm sure there will be at least one or two more cold shots with potential for the NW of England before the end of March.

Remember, March can sometimes be the snowiest month. Northerlies at the end of February to mid-March have more of a kick than in December/January/early Feb.

Lol. Yeah, posting charts for February 23rd is by far the most accurate method of forecasting the weather known to man. Never known anything to be so damn good.

Of course fi, and a millions things can change, but nice to see anyway. Trends not specifics we're looking for and a nice mild trend is developing.

It's better than cherry picking perfect easterly perturbations (lol) in the model thread that don't materialize.

Good too see some have had some snow today, still snowless here though and I expect it to remain that way now until next winter. Off purse FI continues to show "promise", but hasn't that been the case since early January.

Uhhh, what trend? One model run can't be classed as a trend!

This month will be blocked, with any mild limited to 2-3 days at best.

Winter is certainly not over yet :)

UK Outlook for Wednesday 15 Feb 2012 to Friday 24 Feb 2012:

Wintry showers are likely over some northern and eastern parts of the UK on Wednesday, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle more likely elsewhere. It will probably remain unsettled during the second half of next week and northern parts of the UK will probably see periods of rain, with snow possible on high ground, perhaps to low levels at times in the north and east. The south and west will remain drier and brighter, although with rain possible at times. Many areas should see temperatures around normal for a time next week, but it is likely to become colder than average by the following week. With the weather likely to remain unsettled, showers or longer spells of rain are likely across the UK, with further sleet and snow in places.

Its not going be over until I say it is.

The bloke posts charts from t300 and quotes of much needed rain. Dear me.

It has shown mild south Westerlies in FI all winter mainly due to the GFS having a zonal default setting after 192.
