What a raw cold winters day - low cloud and mist shrouding everything with the cold surface air well and truly embedded in everything. We even saw some light snow during the early afternoon - not enough to settle but quite a surprise all the same. A really bleak mid winters day.

Tonight - cloudy again so temps are not dropping much but another sub-zero one, it will our 15th consecutive night with an air frost.

Still lots of icy snow lying in the fields and in sheltered areas - the bowling green has a thick cover on it still indicative of the persistance and depth of cold.

Tomorrow - another raw cold dank winter day with no sunshine, and Sunday looks equally uninspiring a little milder but no sun - so a miserable weekend in prospect.

Looking ahead to next week - a weak northerly on tuesday into wednesday, but a much more potent one later in the week which could bring some further snowfall and much clearer conditions, next weekend could be a superb one for winter walking. All the signals are there as they have been for weeks now that Feb will end on a very wintry note this lasting well into March.

Signals, don't mean a great deal at this range. The recent "easterly" and encroaches from the west have illustrated how tough it is to get the right synoptics here in the North West.

An Irish sea streamer after embedded cold, an unstable front moving down on a Northerly flow, a pretty ferocious North Easterly or a cold December North Westerly. Wake me up when any of the above are due.

Considerable temp variations at the moment, western ireland +9c - eastern england -9c - still 0c here but I expect it will take a dive through the night. The northerly on Tuesday is looking like a very weak affair at the moment, and I won't even consider next weekend until Thursday next week. Hope there is one more snow event waiting to strike before winter bid's farewell to the northern hemisphere.

Massive temperature contrasts over the British Isles, already -11c at Leconfield! Many areas -5c to -8c in the east. 1.7c here and still overcast with the very boring period of weather continuing! :help:

Hope so but losing faith, I am certainly not worried about a West based -NAO, i would gladly see one modelled for next weekend for the next few days because its big odds on that the pattern would be shifted East nearer the time, i would much rather have leeway that way than see the direct hit modelled bang on like Tuesday / Wednesday's Northerly was and then got shifted East.

Indeed. -11.7C in Yorkshire now, and we're sat at -0.5C. An air frost yes, but we would be classed as mild compared to them

It's at times like these, I hate living in this region. Actually, scratch that, I hate living in this region full stop. It's full of horrible locations, bland scenery (bar the peak district) & chavs.

Blah.

That's a lot of snow! Certainly turning into a severe winter on the continent. Maybe it'll be our turn next year?

Had a very light dusting of snow overnight, getting annoyed by these tiny snowfalls, would much rather one big dump of several inches than these tiny amounts every week or so.

Looking like a drab day today, misty and murky, not a breath of wind, temp 1c.

Currently -2c here with just the slightest hint of flakes of snow in the air. Even though there is little in the way of a breeze it still feels bitterly cold and raw outside and several days of damp and drizzly conditions along with freezing temeratures have left the trees and walls appearing silver.

Thinking of taking a trip in the car to find some snow, take my daughter sledging..thinking of the peaks, any recommendations?

You'll have to get pretty high up I think. There was a lot of melt at the start of the week

Thanks, just taken a look at a few webcams, seems to be fairly patchy cover, might have to abandon. Always next weekend eh with a cold North Westerly possible.

Even with quite a weak nw there will probably be snow on the western peaks
