All but stopped snowing here has settled on cars and grass but not pavements. Hoping for more about midnight. Can't see the radars as on phone. Can anyone see if we will get more at midnight?

Go on the website raintoday, you can track it yourself. Another hour and it looks like like getting heavier.

The Raintoday radar is showing precip everywhere apart from a small strip stretching from Petersfield down to Portsmouth along the A3 corridor. Not snowed here in Petersfield yet - will the South Downs have an effect with the precip coming from a certain direction? We in Petersfield normally cop it!

What is it that determines the size of flakes? Is it the rate of "rain" or something else?

Hi Stormforce. Big flakes tend to occur when the temp is just above freezing point, so the flakes melt slightly then re-freeze and stick together. Yes if the temp were well above freezing and it was heavy rain, then near freezing, heavy snow and big flakes!

Ah ha BBC News has a headline at the end..."metoffice say get ready for severe weather for the next couple of days"...so does that mean the warnings have changed on the site? I havent checked. Still snowing and I love that sight when you can see it on leaves and the trees. I have also been doing a very technical piece of analysis on the radar....running the hour loop and squinting to see if there are intensifications. and Yep there is. That one south of Brum and headed for Dorset looks very naughty....

Hubby just got in from the pub and says its settling on grass but crystallising on pavement and getting very icy underfoot. He had timberland walking boots on and still slipped (admittedly the beer might have had something to do with it!)

What is everyone going to do when councils start turning of street lights late at night??

Building up to a good covering now in Micheldever Station, cant understand the BBC News forecast, it showed no snow for the coast and most that does fall is north and west of here still and most places no more than a centimetre or two.

Where is the snow gone, radar says snow, sky says no

windseeker, what did the GFS timeframes at 0300 or 0600 suggest with regrads to snow? Did you get a chance to look?

Having a good look at the satellite and the surface charts, quite a complex - and developing - situation. I've a feeling there may be a small LP somewhere near, perhaps over N Hampshire/Berkshire, not enough data to be sure. In any case, it's clear from the cloud motion that the cold continental air is pushing back again. The 2 frontal zones seem to be very close together or even merging, which may account for the intensification we've seen in recent hours, that together with that possible LP.

This situation is different from the weekend in that we don't have a slightly warmer airmass coming in from the NW behind the precipitation as happened then, but the very cold, dry air coming in from the E instead.

Our region is well on the cold side of the fronts so rain or snow will largely depend on local wind shifts (onshore or offshore)

Most interesting and no doubt giving the forecasters a hard time!
