Went for one of my usual beach walks at Pevensey Bay earlier and found about a mile of beach at the shoreline covered in dead starfish and clumps of mussels. Anybody any ideas what has caused this?

Not sure if its pollution (nothing evident), tides, disease or what? Too many to have been thrown over the side by fisherman I think, just curious really!

it usually happens after storms. as starfish feed on mussels, it would explain why they were found together. i suppose a strong tidal flow, or unusually high tide, might wash them in or strand them.

That really must have been upsetting for you to see Coast! Were they all dead? Have you seen anything like this before in this area?

It could be that they have just come to the end of their life cycle, died after mating and spawning and have been dead in the sea for a while then got washed ashore by high tides or strong winds which happens with jellyfish sometimes as well…..or it could be a sign of the end of the world…either way I’m sure the seagulls will enjoy a feast!

Was a bit bizarre as there were so many of them and yes, they were all dead. One or two big squid amongst them too, must be the aftermath of some strong storm or tidal activity or mass suicide!

Not uncommon it seems:
