March 2012, Llanwnnen, Lampeter, Ceredigion

Very mild and very dry

The driest month since April 2007 (14mm), and slightly drier than March 2011 (28mm) and less than 1mm fell in the final 2 weeks. Very mild too, in fact with average maxima of 13.9c which is higher than the April mean. An exceptionally warm and sunny spell occurred towards the end, with temperatures close to 70f (21c), and not far off the all time March record. No sleet or snow fell at all, quite unusual for this month.

1st- 2nd: First two days were dry, and after ground frosts, and fog 2nd, some sunny spells; Very mild.

3rd- 7th: Unsettled and quite windy, rain or showers at times, sunny spells too. Temperatures close to average, but cool on the 4th.

8th- 15th: The Azores high pressure gradually transferred across England and east into the North Sea. Mostly dry but rather cloudy, even some drizzle at times. Mist and fog quite a feature 12th- 15th. Mild, and became very mild on some of the brighter days.

16th- 17th: Mild and rather windy with a little rain at times, also a little sunshine.

18th- 21st: High pressure in charge again. Dry with some sunny spells. A sharp frost on the 19th, down to -4c, but otherwise fairly mild.

22nd- 28th: Very warm/ exceptionally warm: Dry and mostly sunny. Near record March temperatures, exceeding 20c for 4 consecutive days, the peak high’s being 20.9c on both the 26th and 27th. A gentle continental flow brought the warm air about a high over the North Sea. The warmth of the day did not prevent slight frosts given March has long nights still.

29th-31st: Much cooler, some more frost, but remained dry. A sunny 29th then it was rather cloudy and breezy.

The warmest and by far the driest March in West Wiltshire since I began recordings in 2003. On first inspection the overall mean surprised me by its lowness however in the very warm sunny week the nights were cold.

Average max = 13.46c (Highest = 20.3c on 28th)

Average min = 4.11c (Lowest = -1.0c on 19th)

Mean = 8.78c

Dry days = 23

Precip days = 8 of which 2 = wintry

Another very mild and pretty dry March to follow that in 2011. The major difference being the breaking of my March Max temperature on 3 days. The mean temperature for 25-29 inclusive was 12.6

temperatures in C and RAF Finningley averages in brackets-one day I will get round to putting the rolling 16 year average for my own back garden in!

Mean=9.8(5.9)

Avge Max=15.0(9.5); highest daytime=24.8 on 28th and lowest daytime on 5th with 6.2

Avge Min=4.7(2.3); lowest overnight=-0.1 on 6th and warmest night=10th with 11.1

Rainfall=22.2 with 6 days with 0.2mm or more and 4 with 1.0mm or more; wettest day=4th with 9.8mm.

1 day with snow falling, none lying(4 and 1), 1 air frost (1) and 6 ground frosts(14); no thunder but 5(5) days with fog at 0900 clock time=the most for many months.

John, we have had almost identical weather records recently, fascinating stuff, our climate is very similar indeed.. (it would seem)

Here are my statistics for March:

Overall a very warm month, it will be a month close to the warmest March on record I'm sure. Very sunny, I haven't got stats but I guess about 150-200% of the average, we'll find out when the Met-office publish their figures. Very low rainfall.

Mean Maximum Temperature: 14.0C

Mean Minimum Temperature: 5.6C

Overall Mean Temperature: 9.8C

Highest Maximum Temperature: 21.4C (27th March)

Lowest Maximum Temperature: 8.1C (4th March)

Highest Minimum Temperature: 10.5C (10th March)

Lowest Minimum Temperature: 1.5C (6th March)

Rainfall: 16.7mm

Rainfall Days: 4 days

Maximum Rainfall in one day: 5.2mm (18th March)

Air frost Days: 0

Overall going on the '71-00 CET average (6.3C), March 2012 came in at 9.8C which is 3.5C above average, making is a very warm month.

HOBART is the capital city of the island state of Tasmania, Australia's southernmost city. It is situated on an estuary 2 miles from the ocean and is backed by a 4200 ft mountain range. Check out the live webcam link below!

March - First month of autumn

An Antarctic cold front bought unseasonable cold and the first mountain snow for the year on the 23rd. A sensational temperature of 5.9 degrees was recorded in the early afternoon as a shower crossed the city. Phenomenal 3 weeks out from summer! Despite this cold snap, the average monthly temperature was still above the 1981-2010 average - these decades are the warmest on record in Hobart.

Average maximum: 20.7 ( +0.4 )

Average minimum: 12.0 ( + 0.6 )

Rainfall: 31mm ( Average 47mm )

Extremes

The first two-thirds of March 2012 were dry, warm and anticyclonic but with nothing particularly remarkable- the warmth was consistent rather than outstanding and sunshine was variable rather than plentiful. The 4th was a one-off wet day with some sleet mixed with rain- remarkably the first occurrence of sleet/snow in March since 2009.

But there was then a phenomenal spell of weather in the last third of the month with sunshine and exceptionally high temperatures by day and chilly nights. The previous March record, 18.4C on the 28th March 1998, was exceeded on four consecutive days, and two days exceeded the 20C mark- the sea breezes generally held off until mid-afternoon during the 25th-30th allowing similar temperatures to inland areas to occur shortly after midday.

Overall it was the driest March since 1993 and the warmest since I began recording (due to high maxima- a few other Marches had a higher average minimum).

The warmest March since 1997 and third warmest of the last 30 years behind 1990 and 1997. It was also the sunniest March on record with 201 hours, beating the previous high set in 2003 with 181 hours. It was also another very dry month, the 5th month in the last seven with less than 50% of average rainfall and the third consecutively. Almost all of the rain came on one day, with only 0.2mm after the 7th. For the 4th consecutive March in a row there was no lying snow. Despite being such a warm month, the mean minimum temperature was almost exactly average. The mean maximum was the warmest on record, beating the previous high in 1997 by almost a full degree.

The month started unsettled with a mixture of sunny and cloudier, showery weather. Rainfall amounts were generally low until the 4th however, when a low pressure system situated in the North Sea brought persistent heavy rain which turned to snow for a time during the afternoon as cold air dug in. This proved to be the only wintry precipitation of the month, though the 15.2mm that fell made it the wettest day since 8th August.

It then turned rather more settled by mid-month, but cloud trapped in the high pressure system meant it was generally cool and cloudy with occasional fog patches. A brief westerly flow then established itself allowing more in the way of sunshine before high pressure again situated itself over the country. Initially it was generally mild with hazy sunshine during the day and thick fog during the night but eventually it cleared completely allowing almost continuous clear skies from the 26th-30th. During this period it surpassed 15°C for 5 days in a row. The 28th was the warmest day, reaching a high of 20.2°C - the first time 20°C had ever been achieved during March at this site. During this warm, settled period there were some huge diurnal ranges, the most notable was on the 26th, with a min temp of -0.5°C around sunrise before reaching 16.9°C in the afternoon.

Overall, a very warm, dry and extremely sunny March.
