Downloading forecasts from January 1993 and it is very notable just how stormy the month was for parts of the north including Scotland. We had the gales and snow of around the 11th January but there were other notable gales.

These two from the 15th January

This from the 21st January

January 1993 was one of the windest Januaries on record here with a mean speed at 0900 of 22.6 mph. There were 10 days with gales during the month and the gale on the 23rd gave a gust of 94 mph and caused a lot of tree damage in the local forestry commission plantations.

I remember the month being a very wet unsettled windy month in the main with little settled conditions and quite a bit of wet snow for the fells which quickly thawed as warm sectors often ousted the cold sectors away quickly. It came on the back of a very quiet December which brought alot of cold foggy weather. 1993 was generally a very unsettled year weatherwise with the atlantic ruling the roost and limited quiet settled weather even during the spring months. Indeed 1993 and 1994 were very unsettled overall culiminating in the very wet winter of 94/95, however the following 2 year period brought a very different type of weather, often very dry and settled with a very quiet atlantic.
