Another 8mm of rain so far today, and it's turning into the wettest month in a long long time around here.

Chances of some good convective activity in Cleadon between Friday and Monday with chances of convergence near the east coast and a slow-moving low pressure area, although it all depends on the precise positioning of the low. If the low ends up too far south then there is a chance of us being affected by rather more persistent frontal type rain on its northern flank in association with weak trailing fronts, and in any brighter weather the coastal strip will tend to stay dry while inland areas get showers and thunderstorms.

Today is turning out dull and wet across most of the region as expected. There was a rather intriguing interlude at Cleadon mid-morning when as frontal cloud advanced from the south, rain commenced while skies were still largely clear overhead and to the north, but it has become dull and wet since then. Tomorrow will probably become brighter and more showery, setting us up for what could be at least four days of sunshine and showers (though with the aforementioned caveats relating to low pressure position).

Almost 8mm here and a bit more to come yet.

It's noteworthy how punchy the bursts of rain are today, a convective feel to it with sudden heavy bursts then almost dry for a while.

Looks like the rain might be about to end but has been almost 25mm, wettest day of the month and wettest day this year so far,

20.1mm here from midnight to 1800 g.m.t and there's been another spell of fairly heavy rain this evening on top of that.

The total for the month is over 100mm now, for the first time in April since 2004.

A very dank, gloomy day with light rain on and off for most of it and a near complete lack of sunshine and warmth. I'm drowsy and finding it hard to stay warm at the moment. It's like being flu-stricken in November.

Quite surprised it's stayed dry for much of the day here but then I am quite sheltered west of high ground. 10c here with limited sunny periods, clouds are buliding nicely... Perhapos a few hefty showers kicking off over the next few hours.

Looking less favourable for next week now thanks to the forecast models toning up the extent of the southerly tracking jet, but Friday-Sunday still look like being bright and showery, with Saturday perhaps the day of greatest convective potential. Friday might have persistent cloud first thing in the North East though, before it brightens up towards midday.

Amazing really, a couple of days a go the Don was at a very low point, today it was over its sides at Thorpe Marsh for the first time this autumn/winter/spring. It usually happens often. I expect a lot of run off and heavy rain has caused that.

Another 8.2mm today takes us to about 106mm for the month.

I fancy April could easily have twice the total of Jan Feb and March together (68mm)

I foresee another day if disappointment here. I'm with SP1986 who posted on hte Model Thread, the recent setup has really led to 'nothingness' here, the most interesting thing being the 17.5mm of rainfall we had on the 18th. The odd light shower every now and again. Total crap from a storm enthusiast's point of view.

Today still looks dodgy for my area due to the winds off the North Sea (which traditionally suppress convection and often generate low cloud at this time of year) but interestingly there are some sharp showers showing out in the North Sea on the radar.

The weekend looks more favourable for convection with sunshine and some potentially thundery showers, although with only light winds, breezes off the North Sea could well be a factor.

Here in Cleadon the weather hasn't really been particularly exciting, bar a few sleet and hail showers last weekend- often not much in the way of sun or showers- but that quite often happens during "sunshine and showers" type spells in this area of the country. It's partly the luck of the draw though, since I do remember quite a lot of "sunshine and showers" stuff here during unsettled spells in the years 1994, 1995 and 1999 (Spring 1995 had hail on 10 days, which is as much as we usually get in a whole year, and 1999 had 13 days with thunder).

Rather pleasant in my part of West Cumbria today. Sunny spells and dry sums it up.

A line of sharp showers developing to the west of Cleadon just inching eastwards, might be interesting.

Had a very slow-moving area of showers this morning which gave a couple of hours of steady rain (nothing particularly exciting), due to the low being right on top of us, but it has now drifted northwards a little.

Very torrential rain and hail at lunchtime today, but no thunder. The sky has gone black to my west now after a sunnier afternoon.

    • Wet March so far with more rain for the rest of the month, but hints of more settled weather early April

It's been a wet March for much of the UK, with well above average rainfall, though the Northern & Western Isles have been drier than average. Despite a colder drier respite on Monday, staying generally unsettled to see out the rest of the month. But hints of some drier weather in early April. Read the full update here
