After all those starts has summer definitely finished now - or do I have to wait until midnight?

Summer is now finished as far as I'm concerned as the solstice was on Wednesday

Strange.

During late August I kept reading on here that it lasted until 21st September.

Equinox is tomorrow @ 1449

Summer ended 31st August anyway - officially.

In feel it really only lasted a few weeks from late July to early September. Could count the late May spell too I guess.

If today is the last day it's certainly ended how it started.

Rain all day here but the cloud should disperse enough for a ground frost later!

Yeah a very poor year for those of us that like it not cold & wet all the time! And for gardening too - still trying to ripen my peppers but think its getting too late now :(

I can't believe Canada was ever on my list of places to move to for reliable snowy winters..

But you are going to say that in the middle of a very cool and dull period, possibly the coldest second half of September for quite some time. Recent Septembers have had much better periods than this, with temperatures not that far of the expected values for Summer. Late September 2009 for instance.
